Thank you Plex for taking the time for app development. But I think I speak for everyone when I say it is cumbersome to have a different app for every function and these should all be integrated into the main app.
So far you have Plex, Plex Dash, and Plex Amp. I wish whole heartedly that all the features with Dash and Amp were in the main app only.
Why?
Ease of access. I use the Plex app regularly and it is on my home screen. Switch apps is cumbersome AND the new apps take up too much real estate.
No, you don’t speak for everyone. I don’t know much about Plex Dash, but Plex Amp is a response to a great many user requests for a small, WinAmp-like player.
The underlying playback engine and features associated with it are already in the main Plex apps, and have been for months. This is from Plex Labs, which explores new ideas and ways of approaching things, without taking time away from any core development.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Doesn’t explain why multiple apps are required. I don’t know the Plex corporate structure, but sounds like Plex is divided into different streams and each developing their own ideas (please correct me if that is incorrect)
In my humble opinion, still wish ideas were incorporated into a single app and resources applied to community feature requests.
Most of the apps are following one, streamlined design. Then there is Plex Labs. Think of it like R&D or passion projects people do on their weekends and evenings. There’s a distinction between things released under ”Plex Labs” and official ”Plex” banners
Think of Plex Labs as a proving grounds/proof of concept for new features. These can make it into the regular Plex apps after a while. Also consider, these apps are written from the ground up for a specific purpose. It doesn’t need to incorporate these features into existing programs that may be written differently.
