Stream buffers when HDR tone mapping is enabled

Server Version#: Version 4.125.1
Player Version#: Client is 5.80.0. Platform version is 4.4.0

Hi.

I upgraded to plex pass so that I would be able to utilise HDR Tone mapping. However when enabled, I get buffering every 5-10 seconds. This only happens when subs are turned on though.
How can I use this feature with subtitles enabled?

I’m not sure why but when I changed the quality on the tv to the ‘original’ highest quality (59mb/s) it somehow runs smoothly now where it used to be very sluggish and subs work fine?
I’m unsure what’s going on tbh.

On Windows, HDR to SDR tone mapping is still performed in software only.
Burning-in of subtitles is also performed in software. Apparently your CPU cannot perform both tasks fast enough when it has to do them both at the same time.

The second screenshot doesn’t show transcoding, but Direct Play. i.e. the server CPU doesn’t have much to do in this case.

So running the file at the higher bitrate which was the ‘original’ bitrate is always the best way to go? This means that the cpu doesn’t have to do any transcoding?
Also what exactly is HDR tone mapping? I’m not going from HDR to SDR am I?

You do, when transcoding is invoked. Which was the case in the first screenshot.

There is currently no way to retain the HDR color space when transcoding in Plex.

It’s not primarily a matter of bandwidth per se. But playing the file as it is, without changing anything about it.
If the player device is capable of doing that, and the available bandwidth between server and player is sufficient, this is the best case scenario. Because it means the full quality of the source file is available to the player and the server doesn’t have to do anything but shoveling the data from storage to player.

Okay I understand I think. Why is it that when HDR tone mapping isn’t enabled the picture looks dull in color but when enabled it’s vibrant even though you’re losing HDR?

Maybe your screen isn’t actually HDR compatible? Or you have forced it into SDR mode somehow, maybe with a setting.

Not sure. It’s definitely a HDR compatible tv as it supports Dolby Vision etc. And the source is HDR10 4k and runs fine. But the colors are more vibrant with HDR tone mapping enabled.
