I have the Plex Server set up to be accessed remotely. I can see my library from the android app over the Internet and even stream to the phone. I would like to cast to the chromecast at work… I can access the chromecast using the Google Home app. But when I try to find the chromecast from the Plex app, it doesn’t find it and instead it tells me that I need to purchase plex pass to cast to Sonos.
I successfully stream to the chromecast at Home on the LAN. Do I need to purchase the app to be able to accomplish this?
Are you at work? You can only cast from/to while on the same network. You might want to check with your company’s IT person to see if the CC is allowed to be accessed by non-authorized devices.
I have done this successfully, stream my plex stuff remotely to a local chromecast endpoint, but i could only get it to work using chrome browser. And as was mentioned make sure you actually have CC access at work. You may be blocked even if you’re on the same local network. Corporate IT environments tend to be pretty restrictive.
I am trying to stream to the chromecast at work which I set up (and several others). As I said I can access the chromecast using the Google Home app. We use the chromecasts to cast the laptop screen to the TVs. The plex server is located at home. I can stream (with the time limit) to my phone at work using the Plex Android app so I know that remote streaming is working but for some reason the Plex app doesn’t detect the chromecast when I tap on the cast button and instead tells me to purchase plex pass to cast to Sonos. I also tried with another chromecast. Just doesn’t detect it.
At home, the plex app detects my chromecast which is on the same network as the plex server. Is it only possible to stream to a chromecast on a LAN when using the plex app? @pandas So do you have the same issue as myself with the plex app not detecting chromecast? Since you said you could only get it to work through the chrome browser. I thought maybe that I needed to purchase the app but you have plex pass.
Objective: Stream to chromecast at work from plex server located at home using the Plex Android app.
I’m not familiar with the android app and chromecast behavior is very specific to the client. I find chrome browser works best in all cases so I use it as my baseline. You should test with chrome first, instead of using an app in demo mode that might flake or time out on you (not a good testing situation). If you get chrome to work, then thats step 1 and you know it’s an android issue.
Needed to purchase/activate the app. Now the app can detect chromecast when streaming from a remote server. Have to say remote streaming works pretty well. No buffering and great quality as long as you have the upload speed to back it up.
