Streaming 1080p to an 4K does usually require transcoding?

I have a Sony x950G TV, and I’m building an unraid server with a Plex installation, and I’m wondering if generally speaking 1080p videos will require transcoding to a 4K TV.

you might want to review this entire thread @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you

but, in general, no.

plex does not ‘upscale’ or upconvert anything to higher resolution.

any upscaling will be done by the TV (or receiver if you have one that does that).

the FAQ link above, will also explain that smart tvs are almost always incompatible with HD audio (ie TRUEHD/ATMOS and some don’t even like DTS).

so content with incompatible audio, the audio will be converted.

if subtitles are enabled + audio being converted = the video will also be converted.

Definitely NO, but make sure your Plex TV app audio, Video settings are correct and correlate with the TV manufactures specifications.

Interesting to note that your TV supports eARC, if you have a Network Receiver with eARC the possibilities of HD-MA compatibility are greater. This would also depend on Channel configuration of said receiver with eARC.

If I may augment.

Transcoding will be required if:

  1. The television cannot accept the video container format directly – This is DirectStream
  2. If the video encoding is not accepted by the television – This is transcode and the output will be H.264.
