On news of the new Xbox One app I bought a Plex pass so that I can stream my AVCHD MTS (Sony) and other home movies to the xbox from my Synology DS214 Play. I have latest software versions installed everywhere. The problem is the streaming pauses every few seconds. I don't think this a network issue as the xbox is wired to the synology. Also I loaded the home cinema app onto my Windows 8 pc and the streaming of the same file to the pc from the NAS is seamless and good quality.

It sounds like the format of your video file is not supported by the Xbox One client and hence the plex server is transcoding the file which is very CPU intensive. NAS tend to have very weak processors and can't keep up with realtime transcoding. This is why playback stops every couple of seconds.
Thanks for the responses. The DS214PLAY supports hardware transcoding which seems to work well when streaming to mobile devices. Is it possible that the Plex Synology server doesn't make use of this?
So my immediate alternative is to use a pc as the server. Any others?

When playing something in XB1, go to plex.tv and go to active sessions. When it says your username, click the info button in the top right and see if it's transcoding or not. We can then narrow down whether its a transcoding issue or a network issue.
It is transcoding which explains the poor performance.
I can play the same file perfectly on the XBOX using the Play To feature from a Windows laptop. Not sure whether that is transcoding or not but looks like a better solution for me than the Plex app at the moment.
