I’m having issues with video streaming quality when using the web browser with chrome. I tried streaming with a mobile device and it results in HD playback, but for some reason chrome will only play at 360p. I’ve tried to find a solution online and most talk about changing the “local quality”, but I can’t seem to find this option at all. I’m going into Settings > Web > Quality >Internet Streaming > Video Quality and have set it to maximum but that doesn’t change anything at all. Does anyone know what’s going on?
there’s an extended/hidden setting.
- go to
Settings > Web > Quality
- click
Show Advanced
- check
Use recommended settings
in theHome Streaming
section
unless you’ve got some weird container/codec combination, Chrome cannot deal with, this should allow for your playback to use the original video.

I’m able to get HD playback in chrome for myself, but when I share my library with a friend, they can’t get HD playback. Is there some other setting I need to change?
In Plex/web, as well as the players, you have speed/quality settings for local versus remote.
In Plex/web, it looks like this .
If, when sharing, your upload speed limit isn’t fast enough to send at the requested speed, PMS will reduce quality to play the file.
Chuck, can you elaborate a little more how this works.
I pick an example. If I want to play this movie at a remote location and ask for the original to be streamed it get this message.
Now 8080 kb/s is a ok value for the upstream bandwidth of my internet connection. It is about 10000 kb/s, but likely PMS reserves a fraction for other processes.
But 13100 kb/s as requirement is extremely high. The file info lists 3600 kb/s. Now, I know that is an average. But nearly 4 times the average value for a window as large as what is typically buffered seems high to me.
Hence, question: How is that value determined, and how can one find out about it?
To the OP: Have your friend select "original’ in the “Playback Setting -> Quality” dialog available when the playback is running. It is behind the controls icon. See what message he gets. I think it will tell that the bandwidth is not sufficient.
Please do the following:
- Recreate this problem with only Debug logging enabled in PMS
- Collect the XML and ZIP log files (settings - server - help - download logs)
- Post both, with the above screenshot, in a new thread “Bandwidth calculation error”
- In the future, do not hijack someone else’s thread

Is it possible to have HD playback for a friend if i share my library? I’m able to playback in HD when I’m on the same network, but my friend only gets 360p
Your friend has to make the same adjustments to the settings you do - and you have to hope you and your friend have the bandwidth to get it done.
May we have the Log files, Debug logging level only, captured immediately after recreating this problem (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs).
