Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#: Samsung TV - 5.55.2
I don’t really know what Remote Quality means. In Settings under Video I have local quality at Original. Remote Quality was at 4 mbps 720p I think. If it matters what my devices are, this is a year 2020 Samsung smart TV, and my Plex files are saved in a NAS. I also have really good fiber internet.
Does changing Remote Quality to Original mean that all other Plex users I share mine with will have better original quality videos? Does this mean, though, that there might be lag or something?
Basically I have no clue what to set Remote Quality at, so lemme know if you can, ty!
The quality settings are player settings not a server settings.
Every player app has a quality setting. It is the quality at which the player will ask the server to send it.
Remote quality is used when you are using that player on a different network than the server. local is the quality used when on the same network as the server.
If you are using your laptop at while sitting in a hotel room and your server it at home that player on laptop is remote so will use the remote quality to make a request of the server.
It is important to note that “original” does not mean send the file as is without conversion. The file could need to be transcoded to a different format but keep original quality. The hotel may have crappy internet even if you have good internet at home, so though may be set to request a higher quality it may buffer unless lowered.
There is no one setting fits all. you can also change whatever you are watching on the fly in the controller interface in a playback session.
When you say using the player on a different network, what if it’s not ME using it, but it’s some girl at her house that I’ve shared my Plex with? Any idea what quality to be set at? I want the quality to be good, and also not have a ton of buffering/lag, so what option might be best for that?
The quality you set on your player, has nothing to do with the quality she can set on the player at her house.
The default quality is that default because it works fine for most people who generally are not pixel snobs, and it prevents folks who may have datacaps from suddenly using it all up after one movie. There is unfortunately no one answer fits all setting.
I would just leave it as is. If it needs to change for some reason like she wants to try a higher quality or your server cannot handle transcoding, she needs to do it in the app on the device she is using.
We are working on stuff for the future that will set the default at original and prompt the user to lower if detecting that their network is not fast enough, but that is in beta and only available in the Android TV app at this time.
