I know that Plex ended its billing integration with Tidal, so I had to start paying Tidal directly. In addition to listening to my 2TB of music on my Synology server, I still listen to Tidal occasionally. I prefer Plex & its user interface over Roon, but I do have Roon as well. Roon still allows me to access Tidal without leaving the Roon app. Can Plex not continue to support access to Tidal from within the app? It’s aggravating to have to leave Plexamp or Plex to stream Tidal tracks.
I miss it too & it was my main reason for using Plexamp tbh…
I find myself using BubbleUPnP which lets you select Tidal or a plex server as a library source, among other things. It’s not as slick as Plexamp, but UPnP has gotten quite good with upmpdcli, which gives you countless options if you’re into a little DIY.
@vtr1000 do you have upmpdcli running side-by-side with headless plexamp? Aside from your post in another thread about a modified start script to get plexamp to let go of the device, any other tips about getting that combination running together (I’d be doing this on a rpi 4)?
I do have them running side by side, on multiple systems. I think it depends on how Linux savvy you are tbh. I’ve been using it for over 20 years and take a lot of the configuration for granted.
So at the risk of going off on a tangent: If you want something that just works on your Pi, I’d recommend Ropieee - it has Roon, upmpdcli, and Plexamp - all setup to run as an appliance (set and forget). If you want to go DIY then I’d suggest starting with a good foundation like Armbian/Ubuntu server. The upmpdcli developers maintain their own Ubuntu PPA which makes installation & updates a breeze. Then there’s moOde which is a good middle-ground imo - comes with everything you need pre-installed but lets you tinker too. With anything beyond Ropieee, I’d recommend looking at the ArchWiki for configuration help, their pages on MPD and ALSA will be particularly helpful when setting up your sound device.
Obviously, I’d also recommend PIMP.
I’m pretty linux savvy.
i tried ropieee but it’s both too heavy and too locked down for me.
i used to use moOde and in fact i wrote the first detailed how-to for running plexamp and moOde together:
…but again moOde was too big and too much to maintain.
99% of the time I’m happy with just streaming to headless plexamp. Right now, for that other 1% of the time when I want to listen to an Internet radio stream, I’m connecting my macos workstation directly to my amp via bluetooth.
But I’d rather set up a really simple upnp endpoint on the pi that i could stream to instead of using the BT. this looks plausible with upmpdcli and maybe one or another of the associated radio plugins.
If no obvious gotchas that you can point me to, i’ll just take on the docs.
(i starred PIMP on github the other day - nice project).
Sounds like you’ll be fine. No gotchas come to mind. My most recent setup was with Ubuntu server on a Khadas VIM3L with a Toneboard DAC. Just Plexamp and upmpdcli. Biggest issue was configuring ALSA to use the hardware mixer of the tone board, but the linked wiki pages sorted me out. Simple really.
