Stretching certain 4:3 content to 16:9

Hi,

First of all - I absolutely love this piece of software!

One thing that has bothered me since starting with Plex (about 18 months ago) is that there is no option to automatically stretch 4:3 content to fill a 16:9 TV. I’ve read lots of threads going back many months asking for just this feature but nothing has happened (I know you’re busy guys).

I have a mix of 2.40 and 16:9 movies and lots of 4:3 TV shows. I currently have to manually tell each episode to stretch to 16:9 because if I tell it to apply the stretching to all movies then my 2.40 movies get messed up (they look fine in the Normal mode).

Could we please, pretty please, have some sort of auto detect feature to stretch 4:3 content to 16:9? If not this then perhaps a way to apply the video settings to a particular section (such as TV shows only?).

Many thanks again to the wonderful Plex dev team!

+1 for this feature.

I hate having to switch it for each individual episode. I usually switch it to stretch 14:9 and would love if it could auto detect 4:3 and set to either zoom or stretch to whichever setting you like.

+1 for the inverse of this

Seems I could use this for full 3d videos that I have that are 3840x1080 to automatically show them in 16:9

This is a feature i would love to have instead of manually adjusting the size each and every time i go onto the next episode of an older tv show that i have in my library as it makes continuous viewing a little less joyous. Not enough to ruin a marathon session of Family Guy but nevertheless it is enough of an annoyance to get my attention.

Peace,

You can create (or add to an existing) an advancedsettings.xml file and add the following:

4

This will force all 4:3 output to stretch to 16:9

Where is this file located?

Can anyone confirm if this works?

You need too make the file on your own with text editor and save as an .xml file Then just add this file to your userdata folder @ Library/Application Support/Plex/Userdata.

The ability to do this for all 4:3 videos is in the XBMC GUI, but not the Plex GUI. However, since the ability is in XBMC, the functionality and ability is in Plex as well. You just have to tell Plex to do it.

Thanks, I'll give it a go tonight.

Let me know if it works.

Thanks! Works perfectly.

I don't suppose you know the value for the video player node to stretch to 14:9? I can't find it on the net anywhere...

MadDoc

Is this available for Windows Server also?

This works perfectly on my Mac, but can’t get it to work on my friends Windows Client. Any idea / Update?

I just tested this in windows and it worked fine.
Just create the file with the content above, and put it into C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Plex\userdata\.

Thanks alot for the tip! :)

Could you please tell me how to do this, but instead of 4:3 stretched to 16:9 I would like it to just zoom.

Hi,

Does this no longer work in the newer versions of plex as I still have to manually change the aspect ratio on all of my 4:3 content, even after creating the new advanced settings.xml file.

Try this

Worked perfectly for me, but note that although now zoomed, the menu will show "Normal"

For anyone else wondering how to make it go to 14:9, the number I used was 3 and it seems to work.

The ones I've tested were:

1- Zoom

2- 4:3

3- 14:9

4- 16:9

Is there another solution for this?

There is no userdata folder in windows, and I have hidden folders showing.

Me too on Bravia 55w805.

I think it's a problem with the  "viewmode".

Anyone know how to stretch 16:9 videos as default or can point me to the correct advanced settings links to read more
