I was trying to view a newly added movie on my Apple TV when it would not allow me without either updating my server, skipping the update, or installing tonight. I didn’t want to install now or tonight so I chose skip, assuming I could use “Check for Updates”, at will, afterwards.
The Check for Updates is somewhat grayed out and not selectable. I’ve tried logging out of Plex, restarting.
Please don’t tell me I have to uninstall and reinstall to fix this. The last time I did this I had days worth of some custom work to redo.
This should be simple. If we cannot install an update when prompted we should be able to pass and do it later, not just now or tonight.
I’m running on a Dell, Windows 8.1, using Firefox 66.0.2
Then you probably had some software on your server like CCleaner or you performed the uninstallation with Revo Uninstaller (or similar).
Don’t use any of the above and disable ‘Registry optimizers’ and similar.
Then follow this procedure:
Stop Plex Server using its tray icon.
uninstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows. Do not use 3rd party ‘uninstaller’ software like Revo etc. Do not use Registry cleaners/optimizers.
download the installer.exe for the newer server version from below
execute the installer
reboot Windows (just a safety measure, it may work without rebooting as well)
If you however are running Plex as a system service
or if you use more than one Windows user account,
a few more steps are required.
I don’t have any of the third party software you mention, nor have I used others.
I have custom edits in many videos for some courses, where there is no metadata server.
There are certain things I’m not fluent in and have not had time to learn that might help me out of this situation in the future.
So I see threads going back a few years with this same type of problem. Is it not possible to add a “Check for Updates Later” or “Install Later” option across all platforms so people are not forced to uninstall and reinstall just because the only practical option at the time was to Skip? This makes no sense. We should be able to update later at will.
In the Windows server page I was able to just ignore the orange line at the top alerting me of the update. But when I went to view it in Apple, my access was blocked until I made one of those selections, and Skip was the only practical choice. Had I known it would lead to an uninstall/reinstall, I would not have proceeded.
Am I the only idiot who thinks Skip means I can use Check for Updates at a later time?
Relax and be thankful that you don’t have a newer version. For me and (as it seems) lots of other users, the newer versions are broken in a way that prevents playback of most (for me) or even all movie files! I had to uninstall and manually downgrade because of this yesterday, and the devs don’t even seem to care about such a massive bug (as I said: I’m not the only one with this issue, just look through the forums).
Now there’s a thought - I could just wait for the next build. Question is, will it prompt me if I skipped one. It seems I read others did not have such luck and had to reinstall.
