Updating to Media Server Manually (Check for updates button greyed out)

Server Version#: v.1.40.0.7998-c29d4c0c8
Player Version#:

My current version shows: 1.32.8.7639. I skipped the newest update when it was presented on my Apple TV.

Currently running Media Server:
Machine: Mac mini (Late 2014)
Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
OS: 10.14.6 (Mojave)

If I ‘Open Plex’ on the Mac mini, I’m presented to enter my PIN and get to the site. I can access settings. However the ‘Check for Updates’ button under Settings->General is faded out and you can’t click it to do anything.

I was going to try to do this manually. I downloaded the latest version (v.1.40.0.7998-c29d4c0c8). Under Settings->General the version showing is: 1.32.8.7639. Note that I’ve NOT attempted to install the latest version yet, so expect the lower version number.

The last time I did tried going the download route, I think I had some issues (that was several years ago).

Is it safe to stop the Plex Media Server, put the older version in an archive directory, drag the new version in the the apps folder and restart the server?

Looking for any guidance and suggestions specific to OSX.

That’s basically what the updater does (except it isn’t backing up the old version).
Make sure to stop the server before starting to upgrade.

Thanks!

Any clue as to why accessing the settings page on the machine that is running the server won’t let me ‘Check for Updates’ under Settings->General ?

The new update looks to have resolved the ‘Check for Updates’ button issue. Everything went amazingly smooth.

I also have the disabled “Checking for updates” button … current version is 1.32.8.7639
