Plex has been stuck at “Generating video preview thumbnails” for the same tv episode for a day. I can play this episode back just fine. I restarted the server and it gets stuck at the same spot trying to generate the thumbnail. Ideas?
Bump, anyone?
sorry, didn’t see this until now.
Go into the TV section and EDIT it.
Turn off thumbnail generation.
Delete those which have been deleted
Save
Now edit again and re-enable.
Refresh all metadata.
It will take time but they will get done.
Do I have to delete my entire TV library? Because I currently have 27290 episodes in my TV library.
I’m a bit confused myself.
I think he means to have you ‘clean bundles’ after disabling thumbnail generation, which should clear out unused thumbnails.
Beyond that, even if the video plays, you might consider re-ripping it, if the thumbnail generator gets stuck on it, then it would seem replacing the file would be a good start.
not the indexing.
Let’s try this.
- Turn off chapter thumbnail generation (edit)
- Restart PMS
- Turn it back on.
- Restart again
- Refresh metadata
Just did that, looks like it got stuck in the same spot.
THen it’s the file. Something is wrong with it.
Roku works, Xbox works, Android works. I am leaning towards the thumbnail generator has something wrong with it.
The thumbnail generator is the transcoder.
If it transcodes for the Roku or Xbox, then I am not undestanding.
Can you get me the XML please? (the part which describes the media)
If it is stuck on just a single file, REMOVE (at least temporarily to see if it finishes other files), or REPLACE it (even if it plays, there is obviously something wrong that file if other files are fine).

Thank you. That tells me part of the problem
What is the CPU? I need model and family (e.g. i7-xxxx)
If not sure, download the logs and attach
Intel Xeon CPU E5-2697 v2 @2.70 GHz
Thanks, so it’s doing software transcoding of HEVC.
If it were anything less than an I7, you would not have the CPU power to do it.
Even with the Xeon, it will take time, HEVC is the hardest to do.
If you were to simply convert that file to H.264 using ffmpeg, you would be far better off in the long run… Would you like assistance with that?
Half my library (including other episodes in this show) are HEVC. That’s why I have a CPU with 24 threads. This file gets almost 3/4 done and then it just freezes. It’s not the codec.
As a side note, you probably should not be telling people that they would be “better off in the long run” by converting to an older codec, since in reality folks would be “better off in the long run” by being on newer codecs. You might as well be telling people they would be better off in the long run by being on Windows XP.
I am trying to solve your problem with one file.
I have no way of knowing if the file is valid. So much junk is downloaded from the internet, anything could be wrong with it.
Have you moved the file away from being scanned to see if the others succeed?
How about some nice DEBUG log files (not VERBOSE) ?
I can tell even more when it gets stuck by the log files.
Can you point me to a link on how to acquire the logs you need?
