I’m stuck on the folder structure for adding a TV 6 part mini-series to my Plex NAS library.
Up to now I’ve just been ripping everything to folders in my ‘DVD Rips’ folder on my NAS. Since almost everything I’ve ripped are DVDs of movies I own that has not been a problem and I’ve been able to add subfolders for extras without playback problems.
But now for the first time I’ve ripped a 6 part BBC TV series and I just can’t work out how to add the files so that I can play back the six episodes. I’ve read the Plex info pages and realise that ideally I should have begun by creating different ‘Libraries’ for ‘Movies’ and ‘TV Shows’. I didn’t , so I am where I am.
Can I just create a ‘TV Shows’ library and move that 6 part series into it for playback? Can someone advise on how to structure the folders for episode-based playback or point me at a link with info aimed at relative beginners? Unfortunately Plex doesn’t recognise the TV series but does find a US movie version which is not helpful.
Do I have to create a ‘Movies’ library and a ‘TV Shows’ library in my NAS server and move all my previous files from ‘DVD Rips’ into it before sorting the few non-movies there into the ‘TV Shows’ Library folder? Thanks!
You can create additional libraries at any time… you can even have multiple libraries of the same type
When it comes to tv shows, it’s worth to take a moment to get the structure right.
Here’s an example:
TV Shows <- the folder linked to your tv-show library
Show Name (release year) <- the release year is optional but can help getting better matching results
Season 01 <- always spelled English
Show Name (release year) - s01e01 - optional episode title.ext
Show Name (release year) - s01e02.ext
...
Season 02
Show Name (release year) - s02e01.ext
...
If you keep a top-level “DVD Rips” folder linked to your movie library, just make sure the new tv-show library folder is on the same level (or somewhere else) – if you add recursive folder structures, this can cause some funny effects (funny as in unwanted )
Thanks very much tom80H for taking the trouble to spell the folders out in such detail. I tried something like that but it didn’t work. So I must have done something wrong in the folder layers or the naming. I’ll have a go again using your template. It shouldn’t be too complicated, since I’m not trying to deal with ‘Seasons’ - just a 6 part mini-series.
