Stuttering on Plex for Windows

Where did you find that conf file? It doesn’t seem to be in the localappdata directory for PMS.
I think it’s real weak of the Plex Team to just ignore this issue. I hope they are just massively overworked atm since I am not used to this low level of communication from them.

It appears that conf file is only for the Plex Media Player and not the Plex for Windows. Both applications run on windows but one is meant for a Home theater PC as it likely has a bigger interface.

This worked for me for PMP checking options for Plex for Windows.

Plex for Windows users I think I have a fix for you. Launch Plex as usual. Click Settings in the upper right. under the section “Plex for Windows” on the left. Click advanced. Change the Video Quality to Maximum. Check the box for play smaller videos at original quality. Save changes and try to play the video. If you are still having an issue you might want to try not using hardware decoding.

@Delfairen Thanks, Turning off hardware decoding on my player seems to have stopped my (video) stuttering. (audio was fine) But nonetheless, I shouldn’t have to turn Hardware decoding off to not have stuttering, so this is something the Plex team NEEDS to look into.

Edit: hold on, I’m actually still getting stuttering.

Did you try the switch to Maximum so that the server is not transcoding? That is what fixed it for me.

I use direct play but have also tried decoding, nothing seems to fix the issue. This issue is there since the last update to version 1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c. I’m pretty sure there’s an issue with the build. The Plex Team need to update as fast as possible.

Yeah, I had it on maximum anyways, and was still having issues. I have tried both direct play, and decoding, and both of them have been stuttering.

Try the PMP and make the changes listed above to the conf file and see what happens

I couldn’t find that file I did Win-key + r and then %LOCALAPPDATA% and didn’t even see the plex media player file.

PMP and configure changes worked for me.
No success with Plex for Window app though. Still studders

Same with me
I couldn’t even find the Plex Media Player folder anywhere
Only Plex and Plex Media Server
I would really appreciate it if someone can tell me where exactly these files are located
I have Plex for Windows Version 1.11.0.1215 on my system

They are talking about two different versions of the Plex client, Plex Media Player (PMP) has the file you can edit, Plex for Windows does not.

The stuttering has something to do with audio sync, if I turn off exclusive access then no stuttering but then the audio gets out of sync. Since it happens with Youtube, Netflix and others I am going with a Windows/Audio driver issue.

Did I miss something? I haven’t seen anybody mentioning the issue outside of Plex and I don’t have issues with any other service either. Plex is the only App that behaves this way.

Update: The problem seems to have gone away by itself. Was there a mini update that you didn’t have to confirm the installation of? I haven’t done anything that could have changed the outcome.

Same issue here with le latest Plex for Windows on Windows 10. This is going for the last few versions and is really annoying. Disabling hardware accelaration does nothing, nor changing quality.
I am not even playing high quality videos.

I noticed that anytime there is stutter, a file “plex.ini.lock” is created then deleted immediately after inside “AppData\Local\Plex”.

Plex.log (179.1 KB)
the app was closed a few seconds after a stutter

I’m by no means an expert but I’ve noticed in your log that it was trying to use the C++ method getUserAgent but just returns null, which means it isn’t available. Try reinstalling Plex and see if that fixes the issue. I feel like your code or a file is corrupted. Now I could be completely wrong but it’s worth a try.

Just FYI, I feel these two threads are tied to the same issue. Plex for Windows Is Stuttering In Direct Play
If I enable open GL in PMP it resolves almost all stuttering(I say almost, as I see occasional when streaming 4k movies). However, open GL is apparently already enabled on Plex for windows, but I feel implementation is not done right, as it stutters on direct play, live tv, and local and network streaming.

I just wanted to say, thank god i found this thread, i thought i was going insane as I’ve been having the same issue for the last few days, everything had worked fine with my Plex for Windows up till now. Hopefully this is something that can get fixed soon as it’s incredibly annoying.

So the stuttering was gone yesterday and is there again today. What the hell is going on here? Is there a way to disable OpenGL on Plex for Windows?
