does anyone have a way to get subtitles automatically downloaded and added to a library that works under 1.4?
I had tried to load subzero but then updated the PMS server before seeing if it worked. now i have nothing and subzero does not even seem to be loaded anymore.
That did the trick–Subzero is downloading tons of UTF-8 SRT files for my shows. However–here is my problem.
THey are NOT usable in plex! When i open a file up in VLC player, it automatically sees the identically named SRT file (to the AVI or MKV file) and displays the text with no issues.
Plex can see the SRT file, labeled unknown SRT (External) in the episode page but any attempts to use it do not allow the plex web app or plex app in windows or the plex ATV 4 app to use it and in most cases it refuses to play the video i tried changing name to have an .en. in it to denote language but no avail.
Tried to force transcoding and force burn in but nothing helps.
any thoughts? i can use them in VLC, which is what is odd, and verified they are UTF-8.

For Plex, you need to have the 2 or 3 letter language code, you obviously did not set that correctly in the Subzero settings.
What platform do you have PMS installed on?
What version of OS?
What version of PMS?
I have the plex server 1.4.1.3362 on a ReadyNAS OS 6.6.0
i see there is a new version however…
i have not done that yet, but i did check and tweak my subzero config. the newest files now have the en in them and get pulled up as english subtitiles. however they are still not usable in plex. i am very puzzled by this, but there are dozens of posts on this.
i did notice they are listed in the pull down menu for each episode, thus does that mean names are not a problem?
My shows are not necessarily named using the list below. sometimes it varies and fluctuates, but if they are listed that should not be a problem right?

If the subtitle is being displayed and is selectable then I don’t see any reason why Plex could not use them.
I don’t know what ReadyNAS you have, but I suspect it is not powerful enough to transcode video and transcoding is needed in a lot of cases when subtitles are turned on.
That should not be the case when playing to an Apple TV 4 though, so you might want to double check the settings on your ATV4 and in Plex. Although I think the ATV4 requires a specific type of subtitle in order to work, but I could be wrong about that.
As far as file naming is concerned, I only recommend following the Plex naming guidelines.
I doubt my server is not powerful enough–Xeon processor with 8 GB of Ram. blue-ray transcoding is not an issue at all.
I tried the ATV, the plex app for Windows and the web based interface all with same problems–but will check to see about ATV needs–that is interesting.
However I read that some folks found that the new 1.4.2.3400 release fixed these issues for them.
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/259539/subtitles-not-working-resolved
fixed it! it was my own stupidity. I had set a temp folder that plex did not have proper access to and thus any trancoding would fail. i had not noticed since i did not need to transcode anything.
deleted that folder, used the plex default and it works like a champ! It was nothing related to subzero or the install.
thank you for your support and help. it helps to bounce things off folks!
