Subtitle Inconsistency

Hello,

My PC and my Samsung TV do not automatically enable subtitles (unless I have a .forced srt for the file) which is perfect.

However, my Hisense TV and when I stream from phone to a chromecast all seem to enable subtitles by default and I haver to turn them off… it’s not a big deal for me but it seems to be a massive chore for my partner who just can’t find the 3 dot settings to disable the subtitles so I have to alwaysd go out and disable them for her.

Why is there an inconsistency like this between devices?

Is your partner using an own Plex user account? Because the subtitle auto-selection preferences are stored per account, not per device. Yours might be set differently, which would explain the difference when you’re using it.

Log in (or “Switch User”) to the affected user account using the hosted web app. Then call up the account settings https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/account
“Audio and Subtitle settings”
and compare with what has been selected under your own account.

Yes she has her own profile, I checked and she has same settings as mine, it keeps choosing the full english subtitles.

Use the same hosted web app, logged in to her user account.
Visit the preplay pages of some upcoming episodes and check if some subtitle stream is already pre-selected.

Are these files in standard definition?

Yea it is auto selecting the external subs (srt file) show a little icon saying external subs.

Oh hosted web app, hang on I’ll check, I been doing it on the hisense TV app (VIDA)

Nah the content is 1080p h265-AAC5.1

Even in the web app with the above settings it is still selecting SRTs on her account.

^ this is the default selection

Seems completely inconsistent for her account. Even movies that have forced subtitles and show forced for me are showing “none” for her, selecting no subtitles at all.

I have plex pass she does not, does it matter?

It shouldn’t make any difference.

I noticed though, that you don’t have the Hisense TV connected to your main account. Instead, it is connected to an invited user account. This would have its own separate subtitle settings as well.

Is this a new server setup? Or did you copy the server database from an old installation?
This automatic selection only works until the user touches the stream selectors manually. From then on, the last-selected choice is stored permanently for this video.

I did have to rebuild it at some point and I restored the server from a backup, if I remember correctly.

What I just did is I removed her access from the library and then I regranted her access, set her up on the TV again (readd the shared libraries) and it seems to have fixed it in both the web app and the Hisense TV now.

That sounds like she used some older entries in your server database which were pre-populated with manual stream choices.
(it’s the media_part_settings table, if you’re interested)

I wondered if that was the case, but it was even happening with trhings she had never viewed or even clicked on befor.

I’m wondering if we set the subtitle settings after I granted her library access and it retained the old subtitle settings until I regranted the new access?

That’s why I presume that she somehow was assigned the manual selections from an unrelated account in your server database.
There were some errors related to this, lurking in the code of ancient server versions. I don’t know how old the server datebase was which you have been salvaging.

I’ve been using Plex since 2020, the backup would have been early this year, I scratched and rebuilt my server then and I either used the weekly backup or I started from scratch I forget which I did.
