I’ve recently noticed that Plex started showing duplicate external subtitles and I can’t figure out how to fix it. Each of my movies are in their own directory with two SRT subtitle files. Each movie has 2 versions in separate parent directories for 1080p (movies-hd) and 4K (movies) and my movie library has both directories added.
/data/media/movies-hd/Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} » ls -l
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [AMZN][WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h264]-FLUX.cs.srt'
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [AMZN][WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h264]-FLUX.en.srt'
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [AMZN][WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h264]-FLUX.mkv'
/data/media/movies/Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} » ls -l
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [WEBDL-2160p][DV HDR10Plus][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h265]-FLUX.cs.srt'
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [WEBDL-2160p][DV HDR10Plus][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h265]-FLUX.en.srt'
'Gladiator II (2024) {tmdb-558449} [WEBDL-2160p][DV HDR10Plus][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h265]-FLUX.mkv'
For movies in only one version (1080p), only one pair of subtitles is shown in Plex. However, for movies with both HD and 4K versions, Plex seems to list subtitles from both directories on every client in both the details page and while playing the movie:
This is obviously unwanted, because it’s not clear which are the proper external subtitles and if the incorrect ones are selected then they can be out of sync since there is no guarantee both versions of the movie are from the same source and the same length (extended editions, etc).
