External subtitles on merged movies

Similar to the issue described in this forum post: Wrong external subtitles available for movies when using editions but I am not using the editions naming format.

When I open the subtitle selection menu on a merged movie either on the movie page or during playback, Plex lists all external subtitle files for both versions, instead of showing only the relevant subtitle for the selected version.

Here is my setup:

I have two versions of the same movie: one in 4K and one in 1080p.

Each version is stored in a separate folder with its correct external subtitle file (in .srt format).

These two versions are merged under a single movie entry in Plex.

This is very much intended. It was a requested feature.

I was watching a movie recently, and it automatically selected subtitles for an extended version, even though I was playing the non-extended version. It would be better if subtitles located in the same directory as the movie were given priority. Alternatively, having an option to disable this behavior would be great.

If these are different “cuts”, and not just quality versions, you should use the edition feature of Plex.

I don’t use the edition feature because I prefer my movies to appear merged. This issue didn’t occur before this feature was implemented, and honestly, I’m struggling to see its benefits. External subtitles should only be associated with the movie they are intended for.

Unfortunately because of the intended use of versions, we make assumptions that they are the same media just encoded differently. This is not going to change.

Editions is the correct way to split movies which are different cuts. The other editions will be listed inside any movie that has other editions.

I understand the reasoning, but a 4K version can still differ from a 1080p version, even within the same edition. If Plex could prioritize subtitles located in the same directory as the version being played, that would be ideal.
