I am a little confused and need some help w naming.
I keep two different movie libraries for standard movies and one for 4k versions. I can combine them into one folder and one library and select the version but the forced subs are giving me a headache.
Examples:
The Avengers -720p.m4v
The Avengers - k4.m4v
but how do I name the subtitles
currently I have The Avengers.en.forced.srt but it does not work.
I need subs to work on both versions.

You can’t have the same subtitle work for both because the names of the subtitles have to match the name of the title. Just make a copy of the subtitle if the timing works for both versions
Always put the year for movies in parenthesis btw. You will save yourself a lot of aggravation

Great. I did that, I must have mistyped something. That seemed to work.
One two other questions, I have subtitle set to foreign language so only forced subs show, however all PGS subs are also selected. any way to disable that? I just want forced subs to be selected.
iOS - how do select which version to download, obviously my phone I want the smaller version - 720.

If it’s only pgs subs then your settings are probably ok but look here to double check
Server settings → Accounts → Audio & Subtitle Settings
I think those pgs subs might have been encoded with the “forced” flag so Plex is treating them that way
I don’t use pgs subs because they can cause the video to transcode when it really isn’t necessary for any other reason
You may have to use MkvToolNix to mix those subs out of the file. Either that or you can disable the forced flag or change the language to undetermined if you really want to keep them
I actually use it to embed my forced subs directly into my mkv’s so the externals don’t crowd up my file system
I do not use downloads or iOS, so I’ll have to leave that question to someone else
A short addition to @JaysPlex note…
For forced subtitles, Plex will pick external subtitles before embedded subtitles.
For example, I have the movie A Bridge To Far in my library, with embedded PGS subtitles. I also have external SRT subtitles for the forced track.
Plex clients auto-pick the forced SRT subtitle track instead of the embedded PGS track.
If I manually select another subtitle track, Plex remembers that selection the next time I play the movie.
Also, if you do not have external subtitles for the forced track, you can use Subtitle Edit to convert the PGS track. Converting the full subtitle track is usually a pain, as you have to confirm a lot of words that are not in the Subtitle Edit dictionary (usually proper names). However, converting forced subtitles is usually quite fast, as there are not many entries. For A Bridge Too Far, the full subtitle track has ~1820 lines. However, the forced track has just 188, so the conversion is quite fast.
