Subtitle issue on Specific Sony TV

Server Version#: 1.32.5.7210-7000
Player Version#: Unsure

I have an issue which I suspect I might need to talk to Sony about as I am not sure if its Plex related - but just in case it somehow is with this specific TV, I thought I would ask here.

I have a Sony Bravia XR-65A80J with software version PKG6.7283.0829PAA that when I try to run Plex on it with any kind of subtitles, everything works but the subtitles.

It doesn’t mater which type - i main tested with SRT to make it as simple as possible - and it technically works if I use “burn in” subtitles, but that basically renders most things unwatchable.

To be clear, the Dashboard shows the file playing, shows the subtitles are active, but nothing displays at the bottom of the screen, but everything else runs fine.

I tried using the native player in the TV, then I used an nVidia Shield and had the same issue. As a last resort I plugged in the PS5 and used the plex player on that and I had a slightly different issue - anytime I tried to watch a media file with Subtitles selected, the media simply refused to play entirely on the PS5. But every file worked if I deselected the subtitle track.

I have tried the typical troubleshooting, from updating the Plex server, updating the TV, uninstalling and reinstalling the Plex player, to going through the TV settings and making sure subtitles are enabled. Nothing seems to work.

If I log into any other location, and even use a Sony Bravia TV of almost identical model but a smaller screen, it all works fine, subtitles show. Its almost as if the TV is simply refusing to display them, but I have not found any other setting in the TV that relates to subtitles.

Has anyone encountered this before and may know whats causing it?

If you change the position of the subtitles to the middle of the screen (in the settings of the plex app) – just as a test, do you now see the subtitles?
If yes, your TV has “overscan” enabled.
Look into its settings menu and disable it. Unfortunately, many TV manufacturers choose to call this feature different names. You might have to research a bit.

Sometimes this setting is separate per signal source, i.e. while it may already be disabled for regular TV, it can still be active for content from HDMI inputs or apps.

I have the same exact issue…haven’t been able to figure it out. Also, certain movies won’t play natively. I have to transcode them. It’s really annoying and impacts my enjoyment of films where the actors have a thick accent.
