Subtitles Crashing Plex Transcoder Samsung Q80 TV (with or without Hardware Transcode)

Server Version#: 1.24.1.4931
Player Version#: 5.23.1
Server Log: Error - Pastebin.com

Hi, I have this problem for a while, tried to do everything I can think of, I legit think its a bug but maybe Im missing something.

Everytime I try to play a movie with .srt external subtitles in my Samsung Q80 TV with the Plex App (lastest version) there is a 80% chance I receive this error message " Playback Error. Conversion failed. The transcoder failed to start up ". My machine is Windows Server 2019 + Intel i7 8700 + Plex 1.24.1.4931. I have a dummy HDMI adapter and only access via VNC to make sure Hardware Transcode works fine.

I tried everything, .srt UTF-8, .srt UTF-8 with BOM, reinstalling Plex, changing cables, new drivers, old drivers, enabling Hardware Transcode, disabling Hardware Transcode, many types of encodes, nothing work. I have no problems with my Nvidia Shield, Firefox/Chrome Browser, Cellphones.

The TV works fine, its 2x2 Wireless getting 866Mbps, eveything is gigabit in the server side.

This is the part where the problem starts:

Sep 06, 2021 14:31:53.976 [15484] DEBUG - Content-Length of E:\Plexflix\Filmes\Filmes Internacionais\Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)\Star.Wars.Episode.5.The.Empire.Strikes.Back.1980.BluRay.1080p.DTSES6.1.2Audio.x264-CHD.por.srt is 87284 (of total: 87284).

Looks like plex try to send the size of the subtitle via HTTP GET and fail before sending the whole subtitle.

After that its all downhill, plex just dont find the profile for the Samsung Q80 TV:

Sep 06, 2021 14:31:54.077 [4592] ERROR - [Transcode] Unable to find client profile for device; platform=Tizen, platformVersion=5, device=19_MUSEM_QTV, model=QN55Q80RAGXZD

Anyone have the same problem or know how to fix? Im loosing hope…

Thanks!

I have the same issue on a Google TV, using ASS subtitles seems to work, in the few cases I tested, but SRT ones always crash the player (on Google TV), haven’t checked the logs, if it’s the player or the server that is the issue, but it started to happen right after the new Plex client was rolled out, with the new layout. So my initial thought was that it is in the player, not the server.

Can you enable Log to Server (Settings → Advanced) and reproduce the error, and then re-post the logs?

Unfortunately the problem is back.

Thanks for your help :grinning:

I have the same issue on android (phone and shield), PLEX will try to play the file then close and ask me to sign in. If I turn off subs it plays fine.

Hello, any update about the problem?, its still happening, even with the new 1.24.4.5081 version.

Just to update, its happening too with Samsung T8000 model, looks like its a problem related to Samsung TVs.

The problem is still happening with Plex Media Server Version 1.24.5.5160 and Plex for Samsung 5.25.3:

I am also getting this issue. I found that using an older version of Plex (1.10) fixed the problem and allows the transcode to finish. It appears that transcoder is busted for me.

Any fix on this? Having the same issues for a while now. @bek_storm did you downgraded the plex client or server?

At least for me its still broken, since its a problem related to subtitles I doubt they’ll mind fixing the problem.

Its really easy to reproduce it, you just need a Samsung TV and a movie with external .srt subtitles. I tried 3 Samsung Models (TU8000, Q80, and a 2018 model) and all had the same problem.

My current version is 1.25.2.5319

No fix yet. You can downgrade the server but then you won’t be able to link to the external apps. Obviously this is something they don’t plan on addressing which is really unfortunate.

External apps as in the Plex App on a smart TV (sorry, I’m pretty new on this)?

Too bad! Subtitles is for me one of the reasons to go for Plex.

Having same issue with:

  • Plex Server 1.24.4.5081 on TrueNas
Plex App on Android works, but the following clients all have the transcode error:
  • LG WebOS Plex App
  • Chromecast
  • Plex web player

Didn’t help tho…

I think this topic should stay open, I as well am experiencing this and how/why it was so random, I don’t understand. I’m running three seperate machines, 2 in a DC at hetzner, the other in my home. The “main” is a Intel i7-8700, 128 gigs of ram. A snappy machine for sure. Ive been running these servers for sometime now, and the tv’s aren’t all that new either. THis has just started for me… So I don’t feel it makes much sense… with 300tb’s of media, are we supposed to run mkvtoolnix or something through it?

What concerns me the most though, is the comment made by @bek_storm where they mention something along the lines as “not someting they plan on addressing”. Maybe I took that out of context, but are they referring to Samsung or Plex? This is 100% a Plex issue in my mind. I don’t believe its up to the manufacturer of the tv to fix the problem but rather up to plex to get it solved. And I’d really hope that this is priority on their agenda, I’m sure a large portion of users here own/use a Samsung smart tv.

I should have been more clear. This is 100% a Plex issue since it can be fixed by using an old version of the Plex server. I used 1.10 (very old) and everything worked fine. This is an issue with the transcoding and I’ve seen multiple threads, I even started one and got no responses. The major problem is Plex doesn’t have any real support and uses the community to largely support the product even if you pay for the product.

Hey there,

First off,I really want to apologize to you. I re-read my reply made yesterday and I feel I came off a little rude. I think the logic behind it, was I thought that I saw “plex_staff” tagged beside your username. And of course, I’m just completely fed up with Plex at the moment. Especially having paid for the service and of course the monthly cost behind runing these servers in a DC.

So this is in fact,100% a Plex issue? That sort of puts me at ease, in a sense, as I’ve going to bat ■■■■ crazy at my end trying to find a solution and the absolute only conclusion that I can arrive at is A) Change to another client/device or B) run my libraries through something such as Tdarr. Both are not an option for me.

May I ask, what have you done at your end to sort of get streaming going properly? I’m pissed as I cannot watch a thing at the moment but I’ve got dozens of people using my servers. Would be awesome to get my money’s worth out of them as well! lol

Didn’t really get it fixed. I ran into the subtitle transcode issue on Samsung, Sony, Roku and multiple browsers. My fix was to take the mkv file and run it through handbrake and bake the subtitles into the file. Multiple devices and hardware configs and different shows all failing in the same way. I tried external sub files, PNG and SRT with no luck. Sorry I can’t offer a better fix.

Dang. So essentially doing the exact same process as I’ve started. Completely sucks, shame on Plex for not focusing on this issue more!

What I really dont understand about the issue, is I’ve only really started to feel this issue hit hard in the last little while. I would have previously been able to force the content to play by click ok when it errored out, then clicking on play, and repeating 2 or 3 times. Now it’s basically anything that has subtitles present, is just not playable.

I’ve definitely need to brush up on info about containers and subtitles and so on as I’m completely out of my element with this issue! Lol

Cheers!
