Still happening, please look into this issue
I’m having the same problem. Subtitles just disappear doing playback. Up to date software on a Windows 10 and a Samsung TV.
Same problem here, subtitles appears and dissapear while watching a movie.
Direct play on Samsung TV, latest version of PMS and app.
Same problem. Using Nvidia Shield a s a playback device.
Burning subtitles doesn’t work since the NAS delivering the file cannot handle it.
Same issue here on the Plex app for Roku TVs. The video is being played using directplay.
Same issue with version 1.21.0.3616 using either a windows 10 server or a synology nas DSM 6.2+. Subtitles start and work for a while, but then disappear. Same issue playing to roku or web browser. Doesn’t matter if subs are in the file, or loaded via plex from opensubtitles.org. Must have broken in a recent update, as this was never a problem before with the same devices.
I just want to report that this issue keep happening with the last updates. As some other users have said before, it particulary affects videos which are longer than 45 minutes.
This is STILL an issue. Can you guys pls fix this annoying bug? It is literally impossible to watch a movie without going to the menues every 30 or 40 minutes.

Same issue here… subtitles work when starting video playback but then disappear after a some time…
Running on: Synology ds718+ (6GB RAM)
Plex Server: Version 1.21.1.3830
Hello,
I have exactly this same problem. Holtzmann describes it very well for me above.
I installed Plex a couple of months back on an older Intel i3 NUC (NUC5i3RYH) and generally Plex works flawlessly. Except for this subtitle dropping.
Usually it seems to happen on BBC iPlayer content I have downloaded. These are MP4 file H264 - MPEG-4 AVC with external SRT files stored alongside (I downloaded these explicitly). The problem has happened on a number of files across different series. Some content is quite short (25 minutes) and has the problem, and some content is longer (50 minutes) but also has the problem. The subtitles work fine until the last 5-10 minutes of the file (e.g. around ~20 minutes in for a 25 minute file, or ~40 minutes in for a 50 minute file) and then disappear without warning. Sometimes stopping, rewinding and restarting the stream fixes the problem. Often it doesn’t or the subtitles work only for a few minutes more then drop again. It’s quite a frustrating problem particularly because of where the subtitles stop (often near the end where there’s a cliffhanger!).
My Plex Media Server is version 1.21.1.3830 installed on Ubuntu 18.04 and I am streaming to a Google Chromecast (3rd Gen). I have Languages -> Subtitle mode set to “Always Enabled” and -> Prefer subtitles in “English”, if that helps. I’ve toyed with switching subtitles on and off manually when the problem occurs but that seems to have the same effect as rewinding/pausing the stream (mostly doesn’t fix it).
I can see this seems to have been a problem on and off for many users over several forum threads for a number of years, with fixes being reported and confirmed but then the problem has regressed again it seems.
Is there anything I can do to help get this fixed? I wanted to post also to ensure this thread stays alive.
Thanks for making a great product BTW - I am otherwise loving Plex and recommending it, particularly for metadata management, it is brilliant.
Having the same issue. Extremely frustrating. Using Samsung TV app. Subtiltes play for a while, but disappear suddenly. Needs to get fixed ASAP
same issue here:
- xbox series s
- direct play
- external .SRT subtitles in same movie directory with same filename, etc. i don’t use other formats or opensubtitles through plex search. all files are UTF-8.
- settings > subtitles > burn subtitles > automatic (current setting, but have tried the others)
- app version 2.67.0.70 , client version 5.10.0, platform version 10.0.19041.6736
- pms version 1.22.0.4163 (but issue happened on the previous build as well)
- server is running win10 pro on an intel i5 nuc
i’ve tried a few different workarounds from the years of people reporting this issue, but the only thing that sort of works is restarting the movie from the beginning and tracking forward to where i left off. rewinding/fast-forwarding in the app sometimes works but other times just hangs the video. exiting out and continuing directly where i left off just spins the plex wheel of death.
no issues with plex web or with streaming these files using other media player tools.
Just came here to report the same. Obviously the Xbox app is a bit wonky ain’t it?

SOLVED!! on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS & PMS 1.22.0.4163
The external srt files needs to contain at the end of the srt file two(2) blank lines after the last line of the last subtitle. Nothing more, nothing less. These blank lines are inserted automatically by opening the srt file with the program Subtitle Edit (eg v358). Just open the file and save it. Check your srt file with notepad or any other editor and you will notice two blank lines have been inserted at the end. Since doing this systematically for my srt files I do not encounter subtitles that disappear. In case the problems occurs, check the srt file, if the two blank lines are present at the end, if not insert two blank lines.
Solution above wasn’t applicable for me – hopefully it helps some, though. The movies I’ve had the issue with already have two blank lines at the end of their SRT files.
Did you add these two blank lines manually or with Subtitle Edit? I can re-confirm since I do so systematically add two lines with subtitle Edit I do not have the issue anymore. In case the solution is linked to Subtitle Edit, probably it does also something else with the srt file.
I didn’t have to add the lines since they were already there, but I did try to open an affected movie’s .SRT file with Subtitle Edit just to see if it would trigger something. No luck.
My own workaround is to just use the web player and cast it to my TV via Chromecast, since the only time I have the problem is using the Xbox App. I can’t recreate the issue ever when using the web player.
This issue exists since 2011! Today 2021 still “external subtitles are disappearing after few minutes”
Same thing is still going on. Plex Server (Windows), Roku4, Plex app on the Roku, playing HEVC MKVs with external SRT files.
It looks like Plex’s Roku app stops showing subtitles from external .SRTs after trying to display certain punctuation characters and extra line spaces.
I used Notepad to manually remove colons and semicolons from a problematic .SRT file, and that edited file played through fine…
…until it hit a time that had extra blank lines between within the text to be put on the screen. So I edited all those extra blank lines out manually, too (whew!) and what do you know, the subtitle played all the way through.
Hmm…
This seems to be happening for every playback I do in the webplayer (and smart-tv) nowadays.
Running web player through plex.tv on server version 1.24.1.4931.
Subtitles always disappears at the end of file, it happens to everything I play.
I can make them reappear for a line or two by stopping playback and re-starting it with resume at timestamp - but often when I cancel playback towards the end, plex marks the video as played, and I have to manually find where I left off. Even by doing this, the subtitles will disappear again shorty after.
