Subtitles doesn't appear anymore on certain videos

Server Version#: 1.28.0.5999
Player Version#: Plex for LG 5.44.3

Hello, I don’t know if it’s the right place for my issue, but anyway I post it here hoping for help…

3 days ago I added a music section in my Plex server and since then my subtitles in my videos doesn’t show up correctly. At first, I thought it was the type of subtitle file that was the problem. But I have the problem with every type of subtitle, ASS, PSG or SRT…

Though, not every video have this issue. Sometime, the subtitles are working just fine, and sometime they appear after 1 or 2 minutes or so and finally there’s the case where it just won’t work.

Anyway, in my settings per video I tried to change some things like the burn-in subtitle, but the image is changed and it loads the video every 15 seconds or so (not very practical…), or disabling/enabling direct play, this option seems to work for showing the subtitles, but then the video is also loading every 15 seconds or so and the image is not the same (I don’t have any HDR with this setting).

I only had this problem since I added musics in my Plex server and I didn’t touch the settings I already had. Can somebody have a clue and could help me please ?

Thank you.

Edit : I forgot to mention that all my files are on a Synology NAS and everything is up to date.

Edit 2 : I also tested reading the video on the web client and the subtitles shows up fine without any changes… But the video is loading every 15 seconds or so, but that’s some issue I had with this client ever since I use Plex…

Edit 3 : I continued gathering the Plex Forums for answers, and It seems that I was not the only one having this issue with subtitles in the LG TV Client and that an update for this client is fixing this issue. Though I can’t find how to update my client version, if someone could help me with this, it would be appreciated.

The LG client is special in that it does not actually stay on your TV. There is a small program you get on the LG Content Store for Plex, but that’s not the whole client. This “loader” only sees an update to it released once in a blue moon. When you launch the client generally it downloads from Plex and then runs. And this is downloaded each time you use Plex.

So if you haven’t turned your TV all the way off in awhile and then turned it back on after 30 seconds or so your should start there. It looks like the last update to the LG client came out two days ago. So you might need to reload it from Plex to get the update. The newest version is 5.44.3, so check what version you have after that.

If it’s still not current you might go to the LG Content Store on your TV, and then go to the page for your apps (I think it was called “My Stuff” but maybe that’s changed) and see if there are any updates for apps you have listed. If there is an updated loader for the Plex app go ahead and install it, and then again power thing off for 30 seconds and when you power back on, reopen Plex and check the version number again.

I have the same issue, there is not yet an update that fixes this issue

Ah, so it hasn’t actually been fixed yet. Thanks for clarifying.

I was reading the relase notes and the latest one mentioned:

  • Improved subtitle performance and stability
  • Fixed wrong audio/subtitle tracks shown when playing a different video version

So I thought that was the update the OP was referring to.

Yes, as I read again my last edit, I wasn’t clear enough. From what you’re saying about the LG client version of Plex, it seems that the last update for TV clients is released, but the deployment is not made for LG TVs… At least, my version is not updated further than the 5.44.3 version (the one I already had when the problem occured) and I read somewhere on the Plex Forums that the updated version is the 5.44.5.

That’s annoying, I can’t enjoy my shows and movies.

All new releases of the LG Plex app would appear here, and you would not really need to take any action to get it normally due to how the app loads.

I have no idea how one would obtain a beta app unless there is some private unlisted app loader you can obtain on the LG Content Store by invitation or sideload.

Honestly the best suggestion I have (which you probably don’t want) is to get an Android/Fire OS device for your client instead of using the LG one, because those you have the ability to side load an older version of the Plex client and avoid bad releases (plus they support more audio and subtitle formats).

I just saw that the 5.44.5 version I was referring to is actually for Samsung smrt TV, and not for the LG ones  We’re still stuck in the 5.44.3 version then :frowning: Fortunatly, from what I saw from the link you shared, the LG versions seems to be updates every 15 days or so.

About the Android/Fire OS devices, while I don’t have the money for the moment to spend on these type of devices, I definitly am putting this on my wish list.

By chance you have any idea why in the LG Content Store the app is still 5.1.2?
Where/how do I should check the app version number beside the store?

Nevermind, I finally found out where to look at for the client version number…
5.44.3

Hi, I recently upgraded to plex 5.1.2 on my LG TV and I’m also having this issue. I lost the ability to show subtitles completely. (Subs work fine on a PC via browser).

Any way to fix this or roll back to a previous version? I tried clearing cache, reinstalling, to no avail.

As for now, it seems the only thing we can do is to wait for a quick release of the fix.

The Smart TV platforms seem to be related to each other with the way the releases seem similar on each for notes. So I’m sure it will be out soon. :+1:

I would definitely wait for a holiday sale when you do. Amazon discounts their Fire TV devices pretty steep for holidays. Google likely does the same with theirs.

Well then, sorry for the off-topic but do you have a good reference for a device you could share with me please ?

Check this out:

Thanks for the link. I already replied yesterday on the thread you just shared. Thanks for posting your log and your xml file, I really hope that’ll help the developpers to find out a solution.

I have two Fire Stick 4Ks and a Nvidia Shield Pro. The Fire Stick does 90% of what I want, and is pretty affordable when on sale (in fact, it’s only $30 right now). But I don’t like the “new interface” on Amazon’s FireOS they added a year or two ago. It has more advertising, and they recently updated it to keep people from installing third-party launchers to avoid that. I don’t expect to buy any more Fire Stick devices really because of this. The updates to the Plex app on Amazon’s FireOS can lag significantly behind the actual release by Plex at times, because of Amazon’s own app store review process. But it’s an Android device so you can just install the new version direct from the Plex website onto the device instead of waiting for it to appear on their app store, or install an older version if you need to, etc.

The Shield Pro was bought because I wanted something with more horsepower for software decoding of certain content in a TV-device friendly setup on Plex (using the Kodi add-on). Also the launcher on the Shield originally had no adverting, but like the Fire Stick it has gotten a new release since then that added that. It supports DolbyVision like the Fire Stick 4K and It uses normal Google TV so you manage it with your Google Play account like you would any other device. Updates arrive much faster than Amazon because of the faster app store approval. It has better support for audio formats than the Fire Stick, but it does not support HDR on the YouTube app (but the Fire Stick 4K can I hear). I also like the Amazon remote better really. The Shield does have a nifty AI-enhanced upscaler for lower-resolution content that does have a positive effect on picture quality. The Shield Pro is largely considered the Cadillac of Plex clients, and it has a price to match - it was recently on-sale for $170, which is actually the cheapest it’s been ever, but not a very big discount off the normal $200.

As for other devices, there is the new higher-performance Fire Stick 4K Max, I’ve heard people are pretty happy with the new Chromecast with GoogleTV, and also that TiVo’s Android TV dongle is good, too. But I have used neither and do not know how they stack up as a Plex client.

Ok, thanks for the enlightment and the tips

I think I’ll get a Shield Pro when I can afford one.

So, just saw this morning that the LG Client was updated to the 5.44.6, but still the subtitles are broken, and now some of my shows aren’t loading properly even though they were one the previous client…

I downloaded the Windows client that seems to work perfectly fine to wait a solution, but it’s a bit annoying…
