Subtitles is speeding up playback of video files

Is anyone having issues with playback being sped up once subtitles are added? I’ve noticed recently that whenever I add a subtitle to a a movie or show, the file starts playing back faster and jittery, when playback was fine before adding the subtitle. Once I remove the subtitle play back returns to normal. My playback device is a fire stick for Max and my server is an Apple iMac. The container for one of the files that I’m having trouble with is MKV, and the codec seems to be HEVC. I’ve noticed that this happens regardless of whether I’ve downloaded the subtitle or whether I’m going to search and used an opensubtitles.org file.

Please help.

I have also had this happen. The only solution I have found, once the problem occurs, is to watch on a different device/player OR add the subtitle before the first time I play the show/movie. I would also like to see a solution for this problem.

Since I try to always add the subtitle before playing, this is usually not a problem.

Player: Fire TV Cube Gen 2 (switch to Win10 laptop if problem occurs).
