Subtitles Stop Working After Restarting a Movie

I’ve been experiencing this problem for well over a year now. It’s happened across 2 different Plex Media Servers (both MacOS) and 2 different players (Roku Ultra standalone, and TCL w/ Roku built-in).

  • I’ll be watching a movie with subtitles
  • Halfway through, I pause the movie and turn off the TV
  • The next day, I resume the movie
  • Subtitles work for 30 secs or a few minutes…then they just stop

You can temporarily get the subtitles to “restart” again by rewinding, fast-forwarding, or starting from the beginning and fast-forwarding to your previous spot. But the end result is always the same: the subtitles work for a bit then just stop.

Any ideas? This issue is starting to drive me insane.

Also, if it’s helpful, I most recently experienced this with an .mkv file and embedded subs.
