Lately I’ve been having some problem with my Plex starting to transcode.
I’ve figured out that, when i have an eksternal srt file selected it just loads and loads.
In the transcode library the .srt file appears and nothing else.
When i deselect the srt file, the transcode library starts to fill up with data, and the moview start.
It seems it started after an update to plex.
I don’t know what to do… so far Plex has worked flawlessly…. but now… I can’t use it.
I’m having this problem while playing on my Nvidia Shield. My server is usually capable of 4 simultaneous streams without even needing to do the HW transcoding. I was watching “Altered Carbon” and when the subtitles are turned on, it forces transcoding. Without subtitles I can play just fine without transcoding. But I can’t watch it without at the very least the English subtitles to come up during the Spanish dialogue.
OK… I’ve fixed this myself…
It was a Codec problem…
I installed plex on my other computer and here it worked fine both with and without subtitles.
So I did a complete reset of windows 10 on my primary Plex server hoping this would fix it… but alas, even after a full reset it did the same thing even with only Plex installed…
Then I began comparing the two installations and found that on my Primary Plexserver it had installed the aac codec and not a ac3 codec. But on my other computer, where it worked, only the a3c codec was present, so I deleted the aac codec file and copied the a3c codec file to my Primary plex server…
And Voila… now it plays with and without subtitles…
So much work and fiddling for a file…
Try it out… and let me know if it fixes your problems as well.
Or maybe…. I spoke too soon…
When i changed the default placement of the temp transcode folder it stopped working again…
So I cleared the field again, so Plex chooses the default location… and now it works again??? WEIRD!!!
I’ve made no changes except for Plex updates and I’m having this issue. Nothing plays with subtitles…not even older titles. But, I click the subtitles off - boom, it plays. But that doesn’t help me, as I need subtitles to watch movies.
Please remove the “Accepted Answer” from this topic. The issue persists.
Really would like a response from the devs on this. Every time I try to use subs, I just get a spinning wheel. Meanwhile, in Tautulli (Plexpy), I see this:
Why is it trying to transcode SRT files into ASS files???
Do you need logs? Tell me which one(s).

The issue has been solved for the OP. If you are having a similar issue, please start a new thread. Also, for someone to actually help, they will request logs from your server during the period of when the issue happened.
If I watch in Plex Media Player, everything’s fine. But, in Chrome or trying to cast to Chromecast, the subtitles crash the transcoder. Something with Chrome? I’ve cleared the cache several times.
