I think I am making things harder than they are. After reading all kinds of stuff on how to enable subtitles I still can not get them to work. I have a video file and a srt file for the subtitles. I named them identical except for one is .srt and other is .mkv right now no mater what I do or how many times I refresh the library or meta data no subtitles. I know they work as on the laptop with windows media player they work fine. any help is greatly appreciated!
“side car” subtitles need the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent activated.
Did you disable it, perhaps?
If your Plex server is running on a Linux-based platform, there is also the issue of access permissions, which could be different for the srt files vsa. the mkv files.
Yes, local media assets is activated for movies and TV and at the top of the list. Running on Windows Server 2012R2

Top of the list is not needed - in fact I advise against it.
Is it activated for all primary agents? (movies: ‘Plex Movie’, ‘Personal Movies’, ‘TheMovieDatabase’)
take a look at the Plex XML info of an affected item.
what is the content of the guid="...." element? (it will tell the used agent)
