Suggested upload speed

Hello,

I am running plex on a 2010 Mac Tower (cheesegrater) . My internet connection is very fast for downloads but mediocre for upload speed (most are) at 10 Mbps. While traveling I am able to view movies at 720p at 3 sometimes 4 Mbps. I was considering upgrading my internet connection, the upload speed is advertised at 35 Mbps and was wondering if that would be good for 1080p?

Thanks for any help

For any media file in Plex you can get info and see what the required bandwidth for that item is:

This one is 4174 Kbps so 4.1 Mbps

Not all 1080P is created equal so some might need more or less but 35Mbps should suffice for most 1080P

Thanks nokdim. I’ll try it the next time I travel, upgrade to faster upload speeds. If it doesn’t work or if ir’s too expensive for me, I can downgrade back to 10 Mbps. It would be nice to stream 1080p from CA to D.C.
Thanks

When you are traveling, chances are you are connected by WiFi, and there’s probably no guarantee of what connection speed you are going to get. The download speed, number of people connected, etc of that WiFi connection would have a bearing – so no matter how fast your server’s upload speed is, the data might not be able to make it through.

I have 30Mbps upload speed, but one person I share with has only 2Mbps download - naturally, their connection cannot keep up, so they have to lower quality to prevent buffering.

Thanks leelynds, I agree a good download speed is necessary. Many places where I travel have good download speeds, I always bring an ethernet cable as well. When I go to Netflix, while traveling, the picture quality is better than I have from Plex and that is mostly cause by a slow upload speed.
