Support Alternate Order / Flexible Seasons (TVDB) [implemented] and Episode Groups (TMDB) [open]

I would just like to add my voice to this post. It is very frustrating when Plex not just fails to identify content but even worse when it labels it incorrectly based on TVDB and not being able to use the corrected Alternate order

Appreciate the employee response, so I just wanted to echo all the other people in the thread that it’d be a very useful feature to have.

Yeah I appreciate the Plex response is non-committal, but thanks for at least acknowledging (after 3.5 years!). This is not a niche issue, big mainstream TV shows like The Office and Futurama are screwed up by it to different extents; TVDb is root of the problem but the solution is available in their API, feels like something that wouldn’t be a crazy implementation on Plex side. I have 10+ shows waiting on it, so look forward to a positive update!

Same here. I’m trying to collect old school cartoons partly for myself and my future child and none of the multiple versions of collections available match any of the orders on TVDB. This should really be a simple fix by allowing custom orders. It’s really putting me off using Plex at all. An absolute must fix

I 144 this. I’m dealing with the double episodes right now. so frustrating.

As a paying Plex Pass user, I just wanted to chime that this feature should not be “slotted in”; this is a major issue that need the upmost priority.

Please add this feature ASAP!!!

I totally agree that this is a feature we need … I also have the issue that “Joined Order” that would perfectly fit. Anything Else doesnt Work.

Multiple Episode each File but sorted in seasons …

For example: If a series hast 13 seasons (280 episodes) and each File hast multiple episodes

Absolut Order only works If every episodes renamed into 1 season.

Renameing Like e01-e03 works, but you have To rename 200 files.

The “Joined Order” has these multiple episodes separated in series and would perfectly fit without renaming any files.

I want to be able to vote more!
In any case, this should really be further up on the list of priorities!

I’m only running into this issue now. Great to see so many people advocating for the issue already. Especially on some TV Shows that have combined episodes it is crucial.

I don’t get why it would be so hard to implement? Plex already got the DVD Order and Absolute order from TVDB working. Just add the Alternate Order like you added the others.

Those are already a big help on some anime though so thanks for that:)

Really hate Sonarr for not implementing any other orders other than Aired…

Currently watching through X-Men The Animated Series again before I start X-Men '97. Every set, including the DVD, TV and Disney+ orders are all different than the script order. A custom order feature would fix this. Number 1 priority feature for me, should be added ASAP. I’m streaming every episode from my PC to my TV using the right click and “cast to device” feature. What a shame, Plex is ideal for this but this is a complete deal breaker for using the service.

In the same boat. Have a few series that I’d love to use the “alternate order” for, but this is the biggest for me personally. KInda perplexing this hasn’t been added years later, sounds like a trivial amount of work (theoretically, not a coder and never messed with APIs).

i would love to see this happen but i doubt it will since they still can’t be bothered to add alternate ordering for TMDB

Adding joined order to the episode ordering would be absolutely killer. I haven’t done any programming in decades, so I don’t know how difficult it is, but I would be pretty stoked if it was available.

Yes, definitely a big bump for me! i have a lot of shows that officially aired as 1 episode with 2 or 3 segments in it (2 or 3 stories/episodes).

for others it works fine with the new “Alternate Order” option but not yet in plex.

TheTVDB has this option in their latest API and also they show the text; Usable as “Alternate Order” in API-connected systems., on all shows that has a “Joined Order” or “Streaming Order” available.

I really hope this wil not take another 4 years since this topic has started to add: “The TVDB (Alternate Order)” to Episode order options.

Bump! For the US airing of Iron Chef, need “alternate order”

Apparently not
You can set the episode order using the Plex agent based on TMDb and the 3 already supported orders from TheTVDb (Aired, DVD, Absolute).

That’s not taking anything away from this suggestion. Just trying to keep things in context.

Wow, I was being a snarky git that day, wasn’t I. Apologies, real life stresses getting through. Not a good introduction!

I think I haven’t forgiven it for the time it wiped out my descriptions, posters and backgrounds. Which was clearly my fault, seeing as I didn’t lock them before switching agents…

Seriously though and on topic, I’m having a great time using Plex, but I have some shows that I’m holding off on because I can’t seem to get them to apear in proper (to me) order, with correct metadata. The abilty to select between the episode/season ordering (outside of playlists) would be a warmly welcomed improvement, too.

I also do vote for this feature… because updated my Anime library from hama/absolute to plex now as anime works quite well with tvdb for most part. (still need hama/absolute for well… “anime”)

but… YET AGAIN… I need to input all monogatari data manually… because there is no way to quick metadata proper book order

Although… tvdb has it,… but plex sadly has no such option…

So yes… please.

Additional episode orderings from TheTVDb are now available in the latest 1.40.4 PMS beta released earlier today.

Here’s an example of the new options listed for Futurama (after metadata refresh for the show).
