"Support Away Mode when preventing system sleep" is ineffective

Server Version#: 1.40.4.8679

I have been trying to get Plex to work in “Away” mode. It did seem to work a few months ago, so this is probably a new problem.

I’m using Windows 11, and the latest public version of Plex Media Server, and have had to leave the server on all the time to allow Plex to work properly, but I thought it was time to try and get this problem aired, because I surely can’t be the only one, it hasn’t been raised recently, and it doesn’t seem to be fixing itself.

To achieve this, I set all the following to 15 minutes, under the Advanced Settings for the active power plan:

  • Turn off hard disk after
  • Sleep after
  • Turn off display after

and set the Multimedia Setting “When sharing media” to “Allow the computer to enter Away Mode”

The General Plex Setting for Windows “Support Away Mode when preventing system sleep” is ticked.

Whatever I do, it seems that the Plex Media Server isn’t available for use after 15 minutes.

The media I use is on a hard drive connected to my router, because I’m also still using an underpowered but trusty NVIDIA Shield as another Plex Server for some of the media, so you might think that it would be necessary to ensure the network adapter stays on in its Power Management tab.

If I do this, the media server isn’t available after 15 minutes, and Wake On LAN simply doesn’t work. I have to turn the PC back on at the power button.

If I don’t, the media server isn’t available after 15 minutes, but Wake On LAN can be made to work. So allowing the network card to power down, and listen for magic packets, is better than ensuring the network card stays on!

I hope that this helps others, as well as myself.
