Support creating/auto adding to collection using regular expressions within plex

It would be nice if we could automate the creation of collections within plex using regular expressions. Basically click create new collection and you type in the regex and the collection auto populates. While at it we can also improve collections. When sorting by release date it sorts oldest to newest. There is no way to sort newest to oldest unless you rearrange them using custom which is time consuming and it becomes frustratingly annoying when the collection is huge.

Would you mind sharing a specific example of what kind of regular expressions you have in mind?
You can already create a smart collection based on the library’s advanced filter (same as smart playlists) – using all available filter and sort options of that advanced filter.

Aha didn’t know that. Guess one of the issues is solved now thanks for informing me. Only other one is ordering but that is covered by More collection ordering methods so I guess we can close this thread.

You can sort smart collections in any way you can sort the library – however the options to sort a regular collection are rather limited.

There’s another feature suggestion (in addition to the one you’ve linked), discussing an option to sort collections descending by release date.

Still… as you pointed out – given this is covered in other suggestions, I’ll close this thread.

2022 clean-up:

  • smart collections w/ option to filter based on available criteria/metadata → implemented
  • alternative sort options incl. ascending/descending order → duplicate
