Sort collections by descending release date

We already can soft the collection by title or by release date.
When sorted by release date, the oldest item is first and the newest is last.
Entering a large collection on TV apps needs you to scroll through all old movies to reach the newly added ones.

Please add a setting in the collection preference window to choose ascenting or descending release date order.

Thx a lot.

PS: Maybe there is already a request like this. I searched a while but did not find this.

Please add this feature. It’s annoying to scroll through large collection to the bottom to get to the newest release.

If you use the new Smart Collections you can select the Sort Order in the Advanced Filters when creating or editing the collection filter:

You can swap the sort order by clicking a second time on things like Title, Year, Release Date, etc.

I agree this feature would be super useful. Yes I realize I can reverse-sort in smart collections, but what about manual collections?

For example, I’ve tagged all the Academy Award Winners as such in my library. If I include this collection on the Home or Library pages, I only see the oldest items every time. In order to see the collection update as items are added, I currently have to manually drag-and-drop the items into reverse order.

If I wanted to create a smart collection for these tagged items, I’d have to create a [smart] collection from a [manual] collection. This isn’t ideal, as I’d prefer to not have 2 copies of every collection I’ve created, just to have them in reverse order.

Also, smart collections currently do not appear on media pages: If I create a smart collection for all items with the Comedy genre, navigating to a comedy movie will not display the “Comedies” smart collection below. This feature only works for manual collections (in the order they are tagged). For example, if I manually add a “Robots” tag to a movie as its first listed tag, other items in the Robots collection will appear below when viewing that movie).

I’m also interested in this feature. It would seem to be quite simple to implement, since it already exists in other contexts within Plex.

It’s Academy Award season again and I have a large plex collection of Academy Award nominated films. Plex offers the option to “sort collection by release date” but it only allows this starting from the oldest first.

I’d love the option to sort by newest first so I can add this collection to my “Home Screen” and see the new “Academy Award Nominees” first

Choose By Release Date a second time! The sort order will reverse.

You’re referring to editing the filter of a smart collection; this suggestion appears to be about regular/classic collections though.

Dammit.

Currently collections can only be sorted by date from earliest to most recent (ascending order) like these. If we could sort by descending order, we could pin this collection to the dashboard so recent films are easier to find and display. Such a change would be a fairly simple addition from a technical standpoint.

As for that specific use case…
I’ve been using the (sharing) label to tag those Oscar winners/nominees. I’m then using a smart collection, filtering the library by that label – this way I can sort it as I like it (e.g. by descending release dates).

That’s no solution for the suggestion in total – just for this particular use case

Thanks. How do you sort a smart filter by descending date order?

The order of a smart filter is defined when you specify its filter.
Similarly you can modify it by editing the filter.

I can get it do change order in the collections page, but not if it is pinned to the “home page”

Scratch that… it works now. Thanks for the workaround tip!

I’m not 100% sure how that behaves. IIRC the published collections aren’t updated immediately when you change their source.

Well, it sort of worked. I set it to “random” and it looks like it sorted random once, but it doesn’t change each time I log in. Oh well, at lease there is some opportunity to change the sorting

That part is actually working rather nicely for me.
I’ve created a smart collection with random order, including movies I haven’t seen in a certain time (shorter the higher I had rated that movie), limited to 10 items. I’ve published that as a hub to my home screen and usually get a different set of “Recommendations” every time I get there.

hero!

Please add collection sort order option by “Reverse Release Date”

In what cases would you need to see something in reverse?
