Support for Apple Spatial Audio

This worked for me. Thanks for the help. Given its possible without much work, it’s too bad Plex doesn’t add it. In the past they were much more responsive.

I do get a 10 or so second silent period when I start a show, but that’s fine.

A nice to have would be to save this feature into downloaded/synced content as well, but this is great for now.

At some point into the future, everything will be compatible with this feature I’d expect.

FYI anyone on Synology, Plex profiles folder is here for me: /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Profiles

This is something that plex should have working out of the box. The capabilities are there, they’re just broken by default. No doubt to be added to the very long list of stuff to do after we propagate more b movies etc.

Using the old player setting works on my AirPod Max headphones and gives me true spatial audio through Plex, including with 5.1 music I’ve encoded as “movies.”

But…while I enjoy the “am I really wearing headphones?” effect with movies and TV, with music it just doesn’t compare to the stereo mixes. The spatial audio sounds “live” but I don’t get the the audio mix and stereo separation that I get with the original high res stereo audio.

It’s also not as compelling because in general there’s nothing to look at while I’m listening to music, so I’m not as likely to be pointing my face toward my iPad or iPhone anyway.

I tried this with pieces I’m quite familiar with, like the Steven Wilson stereo and 5.1 mixes of albums I love. The effect with Spatial Audio is nice, but as soon as I switch to the stereo mix I much prefer that.

Glad I tried it, but I’ll stick with spatial audio for movies, not music.

I’d like to throw my support behind this being implemented out of the box. Unfortunately due to the arbitrary vote limits I can’t vote for this at the moment.

Some of us run PMS in docker containers that make it difficult to edit profiles and we shouldn’t have to revert to legacy options for modern OS features.

Plex needs to be a better iOS/tvOS citizen, this would be a great first step!

hey for anyone who can’t get this working, check the filename closely. lower case ‘i’ then capital ‘OS’. I had this named wrong, but once fixed, working great!

Is there a way to get it to work in the new player in iOS?

Thanks for the tips.

For me new player works fine as well. Maybe they updated somthing?

Is there any way to do this for Apple TV as well?

The new player doesn’t work for me though, are you sure it’s working?
You can double check by long pressing on the volume slider in the control center. Here you can turn spatial audio off and on.

Apple TV unfortunately does not support Spatial Audio, not even the new one. So my hopes of getting it on the Apple TV have also vanished :frowning:

well yeah. I use the new player and the spatial audio icon is animating just fine.

it’s a shame for apple tv, I will never watch content on iPad or iPhone when a 65" OLED tv is available no matter what the sound is.

So is this yet another Apple OS feature that Plex just ignores like PIP on the Apple TV, widgets on iOS?

Then there’s not being able to click on cast photos on Android.

No proper support for alt cuts of movies.

I feel like it should be obvious at this point that Plex’s desire to be on every streaming device and to support every piece of content has spread resources too thin and obvious things are being ignored or take way too long.

But instead we have roms and Facebook portal support.

Maybe the new work on Smart Collections and the Home Screen are an indication priorities are shifting back to customers. Would be nice if spatial audio was next…

Should this profile be any different for someone using a 4th gen iPad Air? Unfortunately I’m still getting all of my streams converted to MP3 stereo despite changing the iOS profile as recommended.

Is there a way to have Plex convert DTS streams to AAC multichannel streams automatically?

If the new video player uses AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer, spatial audio should be possible with the upcoming iOS, iPadOS and tvOS 15.

The new player works for me on Apple TV tvOS 15 Beta. On the new player, it says Not Available and Off. When you try to enable it, it still says Not Available and Off, but the audio changes and head-tracking works. However, the audio was a little choppy and the volume was a lot lower. The old player actually says On, it’s not choppy, and the volume is normal. Head-tracking also works. I did not add the profile script on either. Both players worked on iOS 15 Beta, with head-tracking. The new player said it was Stereo and On and the old player said it was Multichannel and On. I decided that the old player is better and am using it.

Same issue here. Any fix?

Mine was to switch to Infuse connected to my Plex library.
There is the possible fix of using the old player in Plex and making modifications to the player profile…But then the old player generally sucked.

Thanks. I just did the same and it works great. Went with the yearly subscription so hopefully plex sorts this within a year. Bit disappointing having to use another app for plex

Yeah but it’s Plex and it’s the way it is.

Infuse has its its own advantages outside of this particular issue.
Video scrubbing on the fly.
A far better play back engine than mpv player (the reason why this issue is an issue at all).
Lossless audio rather than transcoding to FLAC.
Clicking on actor thumbs in Infuse shows results for everything you own with that actor, be it Movies, Shows and even Music if they are multi talented.
I only point this out because it’s been the case in everything but Plex for a few years and you mentioned a yearly subscription to Infuse in the hopes that Plex catch up in that time. Good luck with that.

But there’s always a caveat. Navigating in Infuse is fine for movies but I always find it pretty painful for TV Shows.

Emby, Jellyfin or Plex…the first that offers spatial audio will be my go to for my media server.

The Jellyfin devs stated it will be a whole lot of work to bring it to their app.

The Emby devs said they are aware of the need and they are working on it.

Plex as almost always…radio silence as is evident in this thread.

I got my Airpods today, and I am not able to get plex to work with spatial audio even after switching to old player. Somehow the audio is converted to stereo, even when the player says otherwise.

when I tried playing the same media in jellyfin, multichannel spatial audio worked.

Plex team please bring this feature. It will be a great value add. Thanks

Noticed this workaround stopped working after the official release of iOS 15.
