Does Plex support hardware transcoding on a Celeron J4115 processor? The processor is used in the QNAP QGD-1600P-4G. It doesn’t seem to be listed in the spreadsheet.
I take it the device isn’t listed in the NAS compatibility list as it’s actually not so much a NAS but a switch (at least that’s how it’s marketed by QNAP.
The model seems to be supported by QNAP (=current QNAP OS available) = latest versions of Plex Media Server should be available to run.
Assuming QNAP applies no restrictions on their switches (compared to their NAS) you should get the same HW transcoding capabilities as if the CPU is integrated in a different device.
Now… speaking about that CPU – it’s a little tricky as it’s not even listed on Intel’s homepage.
From what I found, it supports Intel UHD Graphics 600 – which should also provide you with QSV and the ability for hw accelerated streaming/transcoding (if it’s similar to the same-generation Celeron J4105, it will however not be able to deal with VC-1 and h265 10bit videos; h265 8bit can be decoded but not encoded)
That is why I was curious (bewildered?). Does Plex white list known CPUs or does it poll the processor for known capabilities and then transcode based on what the CPU reports it can do?
If there was only a whitelist of „supported CPUs“, this forum would be overflowing with complaints that model XYZ or a combination of this CPU and youknowwhat wasn’t working
