Support for multiple tuners with different channels?

I have two HDHomeRun Connect tuner boxes. They are connected to different antennas which receive different channels. The Plex DVR functionality worked well with just one HDHomeRun configured, but since adding the second, I’ve noticed recordings failing to start. I haven’t dug through the logs yet, but was just wondering if this setup is supported? Or if others are doing something similar successfully?

Thanks,
Kari

What version of PMS are you running? To use multiple boxes, unless you are using 1.9.3 (or a really old 1.6.1), it’s not going to work. If you are running 1.9.3, keep reading. If not, upgrade.

Since you are using the same EPG for both boxes, what you can do is disable the channels that don’t work on each of the boxes. I have 2 HDHomeRun Connects connected to 2 difference antennas. ABC (the only VHF channel in my area) doesn’t come in very well on one of the antennas so I disabled 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 on one box so that Plex would not schedule any of these channels on the “bad” box.

Using the device’s web page, I went thru all the channels and marked as favorites (yellow) the ones I wanted and disabled (red X) the once I didn’t want. Occasionally new channels would pop up and these would not have a color associated with them. This way I could identify that a new channel was added and decide if I wanted to keep it (make it a favorite) or didn’t every want it (disable it).

Thanks @rogerzeisler. I’m running 1.9.0.4252. Oddly when I clicked on the ‘What’s new’ via plex web upgrade, it lists 1.9.2.4285 which only updated the web UI. But I do see 1.9.3 on the web, so I will upgrade to that. And see how it goes.

@kariwhitcomb In Settings | Server | General, is your Update Channel set to Plex Pass?

@rogerzeisler. Yes - update channel is set to Plex Pass.

From what I understood from your scenario, you want multiple DVRs, not multiple devices. Multiple antennas is not fully supported. To use multiple tuners with Plex, you would need a coax splitter to connect 1 antenna to 2 or more tuners.

On second thought… this could work currently. You can enable / disable channels per device, and assign the mappings per device. It could be a bug. Logs and screenshots could help.

@kinoCharlino: This works great! Thanks so much for this advice. I have one HDHomeRun attached to an antenna pointing toward Baltimore and another connected to a different antenna pointing in the opposite direction, toward Washington DC. I first removed both devices from Plex/DVR, then edited the HDHomeRun software by going to my.hdhomerun.com and “x” ing the channels on each device with poor reception. I then re-added the devices in Plex. Works fantastic!!! Plex now uses the best antenna/tuner for the channel I want to watch/record, and I don’t have to worry about problems associated with combining antenna leads. Thanks so much for your advice!
