Surround sound in apps

Hi everyone
Apologies if this is doubled up somewhere but after a bit of a search I couldn’t find anything similar.
I have plex media server on windows server and am ripping most of my DVD/BluRay library to it. All media files are mp4 barring a couple of mkvs and all the mp4s are either AAC or, in the case of those with 5.1 or 7.1 channels, AC3.

I noticed the other night that my xbox one app is only outputting 2.0 when playing films/tv shows so I did a bit of troubleshooting and it turns out it’s not just the xbox. Both android tv’s apps, both phone apps and all 3 of my PC apps also don’t go past stereo. It seems to me that no plex apps output 5.1 correctly.
However the web player works a charm on all PCs sending the audio correctly.
I had thought that it may just be the xbox but dvds/blurays played directly, DLNA content from the plex server, Netflix content and skyQ all play through all speakers when the channels are available.

Does anyone have a magic button to make the apps switch to 5.1 as my xbox one is the media player for the living room TV and soundsystem and it feels like such a waste having 2.0 come out of it!

Thanks in advance

Here is how you configure Xbox One (I’m guessing yours is set to stereo since that is the default): Choosing Speaker Audio Settings

Not really sure on your other devices, but guessing you are having a similar scenario with those.

Here is the principal method to enable ‘passthrough’ and surround in PMP.
(adapt the ‘Device Type’ to your set up)

thanks both for the suggestions.

I had thought this might be the case but I’m fairly sure it’s either the plex player or plex server given that other apps and games all utilise all the speakers. from this I’m assuming the Amp is also set up correctly.
For reference though my settings are:
HDMI Audio: Off
Optical Audio: Bitstream Out
Bitstream format: Dolby Digital

and the Amp is set to receive audio via the optical S/PDIF link

I’m not sure where you’re seeing the settings in that image. Below is a shot of what I can see on my Plex app for xbox one:

The PMP in the link provided looks different from mine possibly an older version?

Thanks again for the help

The app on the XBox is not PMP.
I was referring to the PC/Mac app that is available from DOWNLOADS above.

Ah ok I’m with you now (sorry bit new and didn’t realise the app/PMP weren’t the same things) ok so PMP with those settings works fine on the PCs and outputs to all available channels (tested with Logitech 7.1s).
So if PMP works does that mean the plex app just doesn’t support surround sound on any device?

Sorry, I don’t know that. I don’t have a Xbox.

The Xbox app should support surround sound (however, I haven’t had a receiver since the new app came out, so I personally can’t test it).

There is no pass through outside of the bluray app however, so your receiver will always show the type of audio selected in the xbox settings (Dobly Digital in your case).

Are you seeing a visual indicator on your receiver saying 2 channels? The xbox will not expand a stereo audio track to all your speakers since the xbox itself outputs to all 6 channels, only the left and right will have audio though. More information on the specific file and what you are seeing with your audio system is needed though.

I hope so!

So passthrough is only available on the bluray app (cheers M$).

The Receiver (A Sony STR-DN1070) does always show Dolby Digital in the display but a dead giveaway is the Sub (KEF T2) doesn’t fire up unless the x.1 channel hits a certain volume. On a freshly ripped AC3 5.1 MP4 file with plenty of 'splosions the Sub stays in standby. I’ll check the Amps channel output indicators and report back thanks.

Turns out that the problem was with my xbox. after chatting with M$ and doing a full reset and reinstall of the app all is well again! thanks for the help
