Switch from 5.0.2 & ATV app?

I've been running the native ATV app on my jailbroken ATV for a while now (FW 5.0.2) but I'm looking to move over to PlexConnect. I didn't backup my blobs so I'm a little nervous about upgrading to 5.2.1 which I understand is recommended to get the most from it.

Could someone please tell me the differences between the two solutions.

I can do without myPlex so that's not really an issue for me but things like stability (very important), choose subtitles, transcoding inc. subtitles etc need to work. I'd test it myself but I'm nervous about upgrading to 5.2.1 so any advice would be very much appreciated.

Dont do it quite yet, as good as it is it's not quite stable for a turnkey solution, also in that regards lots of people are having problems with the native plex and the new server.  My suggestion would be to go grab an atv3 from the store, upgrade your server, install plexconnect and try it out, if it doesnt work out for you then return the atv3 and voila you should be back to where you were.  I had this same dilemma, so I kept the atv2 as it was.

Use something like iFaith or Redsnow to dump the blobs currently on the ATV and you can always go back ;)

Get in the habit of using Tinyumbrella when new firmware is released to grab any SHSH blobs, it means your options are always open for a few minutes work.

... you can just use PlexConnect with your aTV 5.0.2.

Not much longer, I suspect, but other than the PrePlayScreen issue (Play/Select) I see no issues...

Thanks for all the feedback. So apart from the preplay screen which isn’t a problem with 5.2, are there any show stopping issues that I would see compared to the native app? I’ve been playing with it a little and stability wise appears to works well.

Curious as to why the native Plex app for the jail broken ATV 2 isn’t satisfactory. I have never used it, myself, just wondering why Plexconnect would be more suitable even for a jail broken device.

The ATV2 native app causes the ATV2 to have lots of funny issues. You're basically rebooting the thing daily. This is exacerbated if you use Netflix and the Plex app. It will work fine for awhile then suddenly everything you try to play is " an error occured playing this content ".

Basically it's buggy as hell and not just to itself but to the whole appletv platform.

Yes thats basically the problem I have. Have to reboot the hardware every day or so, so it would be great if I could avoid doing this. That said, its still more important that I can play my media and don't loose out on features. I can live without myPlex and Channels but I can't live without local media.

...just run PlexConnect with your current setup: aTV 5.0.2.

The main screen isn't that beautiful (you are missing out the Nav bar), and you have the PrePlayScreen issue (5.0.2 doesn't like ).

Do the test... this is the main reason for our backward compatibility - we didn't want to force anybody to loose his jailbreak/native Plex just for a quick look.

I updated my ATV 5.02 to 5.20 and never saved my blobs.

The new Seasonpass with iFaith did the Job.

I propose making a new branch before merge from Elan's. That way old PlexConnect could still be available for older fw.

Yes, we are trying to get a fixed "release" before doing that merge - that is the main reason for the delay :-)

But I guess the older firmware version won't get full support...

Now that you have moved away from the older FW moving forward when do you think the merge will take place for the new UI

It is currently being worked but it cannot be automatically merged any longer as a lot of bug fixes and under the hood changes have taken place.

The code that Elan contributed will have to be gone through manually line by line to get it merged in, along with adding any tweaks.

Hopefully it will not take too long and then it will be full steam ahead :)
