Switching to OTA - what do i need now?

Ok so my setup (link in sig) works great and my current xfinity promo ends in June. I am staging myself to go OTA as currently I prefer watching OTA where I can. it is so much more crisp. Anyway… what I am planning on doing is…

dropping the HD Homerun Prime box out of the equation and add a tv tuner card into my dvr machine. Card will be here tomorrow, hopefully, amazon prime.
Trying to figure out if and how one can use plex to get live tv from a tuner card as a source?

Quad tuner HAUPPAUGE WinTV-quadHD PCI Express TV Tuner Card 1609

is this possible? I know I can use NextPVR (which currently DVRs) to run as a server and my windows clients will access it for live tv… so the Plex live tv part is new and to me.

Thanks!

This tuner is untested. It may or may not work.
In principle, all decoding of encrypted channels is down to the tuner device. Plex has no support whatsoever for this.

There is only one report currently for the card:

Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1600 Hauppage (Win),
cx18 (Linux) 1.62.27148.0 (Win), 4.12.13-1-ARCH (Linux)
Windows: Installed beautifully: shows up as a hauppauge wintv 418 bda tuner pcie. Live tv works great : little buffering but going to see if its similar to my other pc. Channel scan worked recorded tv worked and live TV works registered in dvr as a wintv 418 bda pcie device. Tuner card installed easily and synced epg with all 55 channels perfectly. Recorded 2 movies and 2 different series shows. Recordings all played back nicely via Iphone and Kindle fire. I’ve been using it for about a week now. The ‘quality’ adjustment seems to have fixed the glichiness. I suspect the lower quality allows more frames to be stored in the buffer so it’s enough to jump over signal issues, the signals actually aren’t weak but caused by low flying planes (we’re near the airport). Very pleased so far.
Linux: So far the only thing I ran into is that you must add plex to the video user group on linux. Once complete, restart plex and the tuner shows up as Samsung S5H1409 QAM/8VSB Frontend. First program guide upgrade takes forever. Once complete, it’s not bad.

Live is currently only available to the admin plex account of your server. No sharing to Friends or managed users possible, yet.

dropping the HD Homerun Prime box out of the equation

Why?

Well I currently pay $165/m for a package that is almost up. I love the HD Homerun Prime box. I am finding myself watching less and less tv. My wife as well… our kids… well 1 is 17 and never wants to be home and the other is 11. he always watches Teen Titans, Teen Titans Go or SpongeBob… that’s it… over and over…
I am tired of all the TV watching he does… I’m going to take us back to the stone ages…

once my $165/m package ends in June 2018… I am going to get rid of cable tv and go OTA. Most of what my wife watches is on OTA so I will DVR them and place onto Plex which I do now with cable…

I only went to that package because it is xfinity - 200mb blast internet, HBO, Showtime, Skinnimax, Stars and Sports pack for that price. It goes up to $325-$380… I forget which…

my 1 neighbor got tired of Xfinity price gauging and he went Sony Vue and says he misses NOTHING and pays $45/m.
I thought about it but there is one channel that is on cable tv that was not (until now) available which my wife REQUIRES

Hallmark. Hallmark was only available on cable tv but now Sling TV has it and just now Sony Vue has it!!! oh plus also Hallmark now has their own streaming service for it for $5/m… WOOOT IM NOT TIED TO CABLE TV!!!

I have been DVRn so much stuff, spongebob, teen titans go, my shows, wifes shows to get a plethora of a library running…

so I say I’m going to drop cable tv but I may pickup one of the other services first to not go cold turkey but minimize our channels then keep going down… example…

I was going to drop cable tv… switch to 25mb internet (from 200mb) and pay for Hallmark… thus…
$30 internet + $5 hallmark = $35 vs $165… however I’m contemplating
$20/m Sling TV+ $5 Hallmark add on + $30 internet = $55/m vs $165 OR
$45/m Sony Vue + $30 internet = $75 - which I may do

ive got till June so I have to research and see what works, what doesn’t, etc… I have this tuner card coming… I can keep that handy for my intel nuc’s to use… and if I need a different tuner for Plex… I can get one… and I haven’t bought PlexPass yet but now I am nearing where it is worthy for my use…

hope that sums it up…

oh cartoon network app on ipad has hundreads of episodes of what my son watches… going to limit him to 2 shows in AM and 2 shows in PM MAX for the day…

just tired of all the laziness, etc that we have become to allow… frustrating…

for me the tv shows I like, now really suck anyway…

AMC was my last channel I needed and …
The Walking Dead - dragging on
Fear the Walking Dead - yeah no

Nextflix is coming out with Punisher series - may get Netflix but I bet that show will be good for a little bit then go down like the rest…

All In All I have been cutting bills… and this one I have not been able to do much on…
home phone - wife wants one because our youngest doesn’t have a cell phone and if emergency calls are needed, well you need a phone… we had Verizon land Line service and was paying $50/m… I called got it lowered to $35/m but in 6 months it was up to $80/m!!! WTH!!!

so I went magic jack .Wife said NO… so I did it in tandem and switched us over and she never knew. not until one day phone said you must dial area code first… my wife looked at me and I said… well you didn’t even know till now…
Have had MJ for 1yr, renewed for 5yr, device died (my fault - you need to unplug the phone line from the world and I didn’t) so new device added 1yr… 7 years of phone service… for $230!!! I forget the true number but in 7yr it would save me like $5k-$6k

@OttoKerner
fyi my tuner I ordered IS listed as supported!!! NICE!!!
3rd on list - Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/225877427

Yeah I was about to say when I was reading this… not supported? Then I don’t know how to read either because I saw it too before I ordered mine off amazon two weeks ago.

Be prepared for the plex dvr to die on your a lot, its not ready for mainstream yet - so have a backup plan for the shows you need to watch that you cant watch live. Mine records about 50% of the time, the other times it crashes or has an error until I restart the software and get a partial recording, or it crashes at the end and loses all of the data it just recorded.
It works fairly reliably with the current plex build from a few days ago for live tv viewing. I use all Roku’s, (recent <4 year old, the older ones cant handle the stream) The new 2017 model express for $30 is fantastic and speedy.

so then the card works and its the software… for me plex is my movie organizer and I’m happy with it… we use Roku streaming sticks (2), xbox one, xbox 360 (which the 360 has the best plex experience to me), ipad and android…

so at least my hardware should be good and ill get plexpass eventually… and at some point when plex dvr is stable I could go that route… I’m super happy with NextPVR dvr… its awesome…

so do you take your recordings and use something like mcebuddy on them to get commercials out and shrink them?

I do - been working great for a decade (give or take) - providing you have a way to schedule recordings (I do). There’s just no reason to redesign that wheel. For me it’s roundness is just fine…:
