My computer will sync if I am on my home network. It’s my work computer and I don’t usually have it at home. I have Plex Pass. It will not sync over the internet. My ISP does not assign me a valid internet IP address so I don’t have a direct connection to my server. I don’t get a green light on the remote access section in settings. Can this work? Should it work? Am I doing something wrong?
It says waiting to sync on all files. When I took the computer home, it fished the sync. When it was at work the server created the files to sync, but they never transferred.
Thanks,
Rob
By default, mobile clients don’t sync when they’re on mobile data. You can allow this though in the preferences of each individual client app.
Thanks for the reply. I am still a little confused. I don’t see the setting you are talking about. This is not a mobile device. It is a windows computer connect to the internet. It is not using mobile data. On my iPhone, I see the setting, use mobile data, for syncing. I don’t see that setting or anything like it on the windows client app.
Thanks in advance.
You can only sync to mobile devices. https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/features/mobile-sync/
Or do you mean something else, when you say “sync” ?
From the windows computer, I connect to my server and navigate to a show. Then a create a rule to sync unwatched episodes. If my computer is on the local network, the files are copied to the local computer and I can watch them on the computer. Then ( I think ) the on deck and watched items will be updated when it connects back to the server. This is all the same as with a mobile device as long as I’m connected to my home network. When I am over an internet connection it doesn’t work. I think that direct connection may be a requirement to do what I am talking about with a windows computer. I don’t know why, but maybe. I can’t enable remote access in my server because my home does not have a valid IP address. My router actually gets a 192.168 address on the WAN side. Very annoying. Once I’m home there is a “direct connection” to the server. That seems like the only difference to me.
Maybe my real question is can I enable remote access if my home router doesn’t get a valid IP address and I can’t configure the port forwarding as the Plex webpage describes?
Thanks,
Rob
If your server is not reachable remotely, then you also cannot sync content remotely from it.
I get that if there is no connection I wouldn’t be able to sync. What I don’t have is a “direct connection” I can use the web browser to reach the server. My friends that I am sharing with can reach my server. I have had the Plex app on my remote computer connect, but it has not been the most stable connection. Which I don’t understand.
Does Plex require a “direct connection” to sync content?
If so, is there any way to do this if I can’t setup NAT through my ISP? Anything like using noip.com or similar service?
I think this is what the help pages refer to as “Double-NAT”. I don’t see any information on how to get around this. Other than wait for IPv6 which doesn’t seem to be coming any time soon.
Thanks,
Rob
It is my understanding that you cannot use the Relay (indirect) connection for syncing.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/216766168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/
There is no way around this, unless the ISP is cooperative.
You can try something with no-ip, yes. But this is pretty advanced stuff and I cannot help you much with that.
It seems the “direct connection” was the issue. After some tech support with my ISP, they configured there modem to be setup as a bridge and now my router has a valid address. NAT seems to be working and now I get a “direct connection” and remote access over the internet.
Thanks for the help.
