Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Part 2 - iOS)

Ok, I’ll need to see your ios logs to see why it thinks there are more things to download. I also need the logs to see why it’s not downloading. If that doesn’t change ever, it’s possible you are running into the DNS rebinding issue.

This new Download option is super slow, and doesn’t download In the background on iOS. you cant pick the number of episodes, or vary transcode option between shows. The feature feels half baked and worse than sync.

Here are the logs for you

Top tip for iPad users wanting to monitor downloads: Make a shortcut on the homescreen for your plex server (the web app). Then open Plex itself and start the downloads. Tap the three dots at the top of the screen (in iPadOS15) and choose to split the screen. Select the webapp for the server to split. Then press on the activity icon. On half the screen you will have the Plex app downloading and the other half a readout of what is happening on the server.

But this needs sorting.

Looks like the DNS rebinding issue for why it isn’t doing anything.

For the number of items, it looks like you have some old Sync items still in the queue. After you get the DNS issue resolved, try

  • cancel the Downloads
  • switch back to Sync
  • cancel anything that’s not completed
  • switch back to Downloads
  • try Download again

What’s the status of support for Picture-in-Picture?

I’m running iOS 15.x on an iPad Pro and get no luck with PIP or indeed the old player with downloaded content, even though Maximize Compatibility is turned on in settings.

Plex server running on Windows. Latest version on Beta channel.

PIP as well as the Old Player works well for me when accessing content directly from my server. But when I use Downloaded content. Only the new player works, and PiP does not (since PiP in effect uses the Old Player that is not a big surprise).

Does anyone have any luck with the Old Player and the new Downloads functionality that replaced Sync?

With this many people having issues with rebinding, many of whom will either not read the forums or will not (want to or be able to) make changes to their routers, it seems like this is a poor way to configuring downloads. Sync did not have this issue, so is there a way to providing downloads without hitting the rebinding issue?

Here are my IOS logs PlexDebugInfo-geoffairey-7.24.1-1350 (2021-11-04 21.35.49 0000).zip (1.5 MB)

I’m having the same issue that nothing Downloads, but I receive no error messages on IOS.

For the record, this works on my iPhone, so that would seem to rule our DNS Rebinding.

I started the download about 21:35 local time.

Yes, it’s bug. A fix is coming.

Edit - You do appear to have a different issue. I’m not sure what the problem is, but I’m investigating.

Hello,

I have Plex running on my PR4100 NAS and with IOS I can’t get a download to complete. I see the Plex Server transcoding the show but it never seems to download. I feel I am totally missing something but I am unsure what I am looking at in the logs sadly.

I sent my logs as a DM.

I appreciate any help you can provide. I hope you are having a great day!

Thank you
-Ryan

I don’t understand how it comes to the DNS rebind problems. I have already configured my FritzBox accordingly a long time ago. Check this again, the rule are there and active…
My PMS is not running locally, it is a Linux root server

I Test the steps to clean up Sync and check agin with Downloads

Looks like you may also be running into the DNS rebinding issue.

Sorry, I don’t think it is DNS Rebinding issue now. It was a similar error but not quite the same.

Check your library to see if you have the option enabled to hide seasons. Also check that show, it has it’s own setting for hiding seasons that can override the library setting.

I’ve sent a DM with my iOS logs around downloads stopping.

The download indicator for me is always spinning orange, never white,

The hide seasons setting for the show not downloading is set to the library default which is not to hide seasons

Thank you.

Is there any way to have the Downloads - Items screen show the number of episodes for each show? I have a number of shows set to download 3 unwatched episodes, but a lot of those shows don’t have any unwatched episodes. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to tell without tapping on each show whether there are actually any episodes from that show on the device or not, which is really annoying.

With Sync, I had a smart playlist that included unwatched episodes of shows that had a specific tag, and it kept my phone updated with unwatched episodes of those shows. That’s basically the functionality I’m looking for here.

You can actually pick the number of episodes, but only within a limited set of options. That may have been what you meant, but just in case you didn’t see it, there’s the option to “Set the maximum number of episodes to download for the show,” which gives choices like all, 5 latest, 3 latest, latest, next unplayed, next 3 unplayed, etc.

I would say you are correct as once I followed the DNS Rebind work related to PFSense (my firewall) things started working.

My Plex server wasn’t trying to transcode either anymore which was nice. The download was pretty quick.

I do appreciate your help in this matter!

@paul_nettieandpaul.com Your logs show it’s already downloaded ~49GB of data and still going. Looks like it’s working. You don’t see a progress indicator on the Downloads page? Can you provide a screen shot?

If it’s going in a loop, it may be due to another issue. Can you provide me the XML for the show The Simpsons? Instructions on getting the XML info. Do that for an episode, then in the XML find the “grandparentRatingKey”. Use that number to replace the number (xxxx) in “IP:port/library/metadata/xxxx” in the URL. Save that XML result and send to me.

I don’t know but it’s an interesting idea. I’ll bring it up with the team.
