Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Part 2 - iOS)

Yeah to all that. But it seems like you cannot download entire TV series or seasons anymore. Or even ALL unwatched episodes. I travel 2-4 weeks at a time and it is annoying to have to sync individual episodes. I also dislike that you cannot use the web client to sync tv series or seasons to a specific device. I dunno how a feature can be seen as an improvement if it is not even close to the same baseline as the original sync.

Ran into a few bugs recently with Downloads on the Android client. A few titles give a “Failed to play downloaded file, external storage device not found”, but most of them play, in spite of being all downloaded to the SD card. Those files give an unspecified error when clicking the download icon, so I can’t seem to redownload or remove them. Speaking of, can you give us the ability to delete individual downloaded files/titles from within the downloads tab? Currently there is only the ability to delete everything or go into the regular view and redownload.

i’d really like to move to the Downloads feature but the transfer speed is just atrocious.

PMS Version 1.24.5.5173 on Shield
Plex Android on Galaxy Tablet Android 11, v8.25.1.28703

i first tried early this month with my simple Music collection with 98% FLAC files that are compatible for direct play on the tablet. i have the Downloads setting for Original on both Audio and Video, external storage on a 256GB SD card.

first test was a playlist of 58 songs - took all evening and some of overnight. this collection downloads from my NAS directly in a few minutes to the same tablet and SD card. granted this doesn’t have the PMS in the path but i don’t expect a 1000fold slower transfer when the PMS has a 1G connection to the same switch as the 1G connected NAS.

i tried another playlist with 240 songs and left it go over a weekend when i had a trip. i left tablet plugged in and sitting on the Downloads/Items screen since it keeps the device awake and in foreground. when i returned from my weekend trip the download had stopped at some point but hadn’t downloaded the entire playlist. there was no indicator of what happened, either on the screen or notifications. the PMS server hadn’t restarted and the home network didn’t have any issues.

yesterday and today i figured i’d try again with my Movie collection. last night i started it downloading a playlist of 61 movies - most of which are direct play on my tablet. by this morning it had downloaded only 11. the transfer rate from the PMS server appears to stay at a steady average of 8-9Mbps - far below what it is capable of on both ends (1G on PMS end, 300Mbps easily on the tablet WiFi). i never had this slowness problem using the Sync feature - the only problem was managing the transcoding but once it had finished transcoding the transfer happened very quickly.

the screenshot above shows the overnight bandwidth from the PMS. the 19-22 hours was me watching recorded TV shows and playing. the 23-10 hours were when i left the move playlist download going overnight.

i have logs from this morning but don’t really want to upload them to a public forum but am happy to share with Plex support if needed.

as near as i can tell what does get downloaded works fine - for both movies and music.

since the Sync feature is being ripped out by the end of the year i’d like to get my media moved to the Downloads system. however, i don’t know if it will ever finish transferring; let alone before christmas.

Hi,

I have a strange behavior with subtitles.

I used ´Downloads’ on a media with subtitles.

When I use Plex on iOS ‘offline ´ with that media :

  • When starting ( play ) from ´Dowloads’, I see the subtitles and can select them.

  • but if I try to play the same media, also offline but from the main Plex screen, the subtitles are not here ( list of available subtitles is empty)

Known issue. The app gets confused with what’s available when playing from your server, but with the “prefer downloaded content” enabled. We are looking into this.

This thread is for iOS. There is another one for Android, Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Android).

If you look there, it is a known issue downloading to an sd card. We are investigating.

my sincere apologies for mixing up threads with identical titles.

Agreed

I mean if the preference is to keep the iOS and Android issues in separate threads then perhaps we could have the titles of the threads edited?

Sure there are those tiny little tags when we look on our 5” screens. But really!! Wouldn’t it just be far clearer if the two threads were labelled “iOS only” and “Android only” or something similar.

More radical I guess would be to the fix this stuff and make both threads redundant. :grinning:

I’m not sure if this was answered before, but I’ve given up on searching the topic, there’s just to much posts to be able to read it all. But I’ve read about dozens of posts and seen nothing about it.

I have, for all my library, 2 versions of the same media. The original one (when available, 4k hevc hdr content), and then a mobile 720p version transcoded using the conversion feature of Plex.

Problem is, whenever I download a file, it either downloads the original file when the download options state “original” video and “original audio” (which I don’t want), or I need to select any of the transcoding options below “original”.

But I already have a mobile version on the server, that’s the point of creating them beforehand. I don’t want to transcode again for every download I do.

Why isn’t there a sub-option on the download button to select the version we want, if having multiple versions? Just like “play version” lets you play the version you want, without re-transcoding?

As it is, this isn’t really useful for me.

Good evening,

Having trouble downloading files on both ipad and iphone with then latest server and app versions.

Only currently able to download off of cellular data and not on wifi at all.

Logs are attached and any info is greatly appreciated.

PlexDebugInfo-GM692-7.25-1615 (2021-11-27 22.21.16 -0500).zip (335.3 KB)

@anon18523487 Is there anything on my logs please? I’ve not heard anything since I posted them.

So later versions of the iOS plex app automatically switched from sync to download and deleting all my existing content, resulting in me not having any content for a trip.

App upgrades shouldn’t do this without asking.

So thats the first issue, but the main issue is the new download, just doesnt work just sits there doing nothing, 0.0kb, 1 of xxx.

Seems like lots of reports of downloads not working, how can we help get this working?

How to Delete Synced Content in new Downloads → No delete all button?

Trying to delete some content on my ipad and realized there is no “delete all button” that existed within the old “Downloads and Sync” function.

Can this button/feature come back please?

Edit: I see that you guys (response by MovieFan.Plex) already are working on this and will let the dev team take its time. Thanks!

Yup, working on putting this back. If you have a lot of stuff downloaded and can’t wait, you can also uninstall and reinstall the app which will clear everything out. Unlike Sync, these Download jobs are not remembered so they do not automatically come back.

I’m using the new downloads functionality with maximize compatibility and max quality (audio and video).

It seems that at least for all HEVC content both the PIP mode and the UseOldPlayer=True mode is broken. (Spinning wheel of death)
The same content works when streaming in both scenarios, without any conversioń.

Is there a fix coming in time for Sync to be obsoleted by the end of the year?

My unqualified guess is that this is related to the container rather than the encoding.,

Has anyone found a solution to downloads not working on IOS.

its slow and I always get errors never being able to finish a download.

The main server? or my user account

Can you provide your ios logs after reproducing this? Start by downloading a video with the max compatibility mode on, then playing back with the old player enabled. Wait for the spinner, let it spin for 10s, go back to the app and grab logs.

Huh? No sure what you are referring to.
