Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Part 2 - iOS)

Is this still on the roadmap @MovieFan.Plex until there’s a fix downloads is useless to me. Thanks :+1:.

Yes, it’s still on the to-do list. I don’t have an ETA though.

I’m having an issue where I am losing the ability to offset subtitles that are downloading with media to my iOS device.

When I stream from my server, I can offset as expected, but for downloaded media the option goes away.

I have subtitle burn in set to Automatic in my client preferences.

Is anyone else seeing this?

All good. As long as it’s in the pipeline. Thanks as always @anon18523487

Is the subtitle an external srt file? You should be able to offset these. It worked for me last time I checked.

When I’m paying direct from my server, it’s an external subtitle and the offset works. However, when I download to my device and play, that option goes away.

Well I found this in one of the logs:

2022/09/09 09:29:55.701 (118 MB) (13182) ❌ PMKLogging.m:14 | Download failed: Data transfer failed (The operation couldn’t be completed. No space left on device).

A great example of something that would be extremely useful to see right in the app

Downloads used to work on my iOS phone about a month ago, now I went to download items for an upcoming trip, they won’t download. It’s only an 151mb Episode. I’ve downloaded PDF’s that size faster so there must be a bottleneck in a recent server/app update.

Edit: No Issue with PlexAmp downloads

Edit 2: I went into Settings on my iOS device > Downloads:
Use Cellular Data: ON
Video Quality: Original
Audio Quality: Original
Storage Limit: No Limit

The Issue was with Download Format. When I switched that from Maximize Compatibility to Original, downloaded the episode lightning fast.

Might be worth looking into that feature.

Was it transcoding when you had it n that setting? Typically thing will need to be transcoded with that setting. Then it will only Download as fast as your server can transcode.

Hi all…for anyone who may also be experiencing frustration on Apple Mobile (iOS) devices such as iPad and iPhone, be aware that downloads do not work in the background. You must keep PLEX in the foreground and the device unlocked for the download to complete. If you would like to see background downloads implemented, please see this feature request and vote for it.

Hi @MovieFan.Plex… should we still hope for:

  1. Casting of downloaded content
  2. Downloaded content being shared when player is set as server?
  3. Downloads of collections?

I lost functionality of these with the switch over to download from sync, a roadmap to reimplementation was implied on several occasions. Any updates? Thanks as usual for your support.

1 - Still hope to bring this back.
2 - This is unlikely. Having the mobile device act as a server has not worked out well.
3 - Still on our todo, but this is a significant change so it’s unlikely to be seen before other things.
