Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483
Player Version#: 8.8.1.21332
I’m currently on business travel and my Pixel Slate chromebook updated to 8.8.0 and 8.8.1, both no longer show synched content. Sync legacy says that no items to display and clicking on manage crashes the app, and Downloads and Sync also shows no data and clicking manage also crashes the app.
About 40 GB of data files that still appear to be on the system or at least not deleted, but no way to resync until I return from some international travel, so quite some time. Although my wifi coverage won’t support a redownload of all the data, inside the app I can’t find a way to attempt to redownload or sync even some of the video files.
Chromebooks don’t have an easy way to install an older version without going through adb.
That sucks. For future reference, does the Plex media player on ChromeOS allow you to choose the location you save files to? On my phone, I moved the sync directory to the external SD card, so now at least I have access to them. I think part of the problem with the disappearing files (in my case) was permissions accessing the app folder as well. Since I moved the directory elsewhere, I haven’t had them disappear from the app.
Chromeium allows selecting a different directory but the Pixel Slate does not support SD cards.
I ended up reinstalling and just considering the data lost, but the issue of being unable to sync/download to the current plex version still exists. Those options do not show up in the app at all.
I can still sync on phone and other devices, just not chrome.
Another Pixel Slate owner here. I used to be able to do this. The Sync option is completely gone on my Slate, but definitely exists on my phone. Anbody at Plex reading this?
@BigWheel Sorry to tag you. But I find it odd that this option is now completely gone. I tried to sync moves/tv shows and discovered that the option no longer exists! It was there this past summer, that’s when I reported that watching content offline wasn’t working properly (you responded to me on that, hence the tag).
Same issue here on Acer Spin 13. No sync options, I see the sync options on my Pixel 4 phone app. This is a big bummer as I can watch high quality if synced instead of streaming and getting typically lower quality as well as using lots of cellular data.
@BigWheel
So this was a while ago and I’ve since returned from my trip without plex and have updated the app to 8.9.2.21619. App has been reinstalled and data deleted several times.
Legacy Downloads and Sync option is now gone. Clicking on Downloads and sync and then manage still crashes the app and the menu option to sync any items is not present.
@JamesShaffer@lafreniere.luc Wonder if you can see the Sync option in other clients? Easier one to check is probably Plex Web, can you verify that the option is there if you sign in with the same account that you’re using on your phone?
Well there are other potential reasons but they’re far less likely. Just so that we can rule some of the out, can you please share client logs after installing the app from scratch and verifying that the Sync action is missing?
I’m definitely logged into both my Plex Media Server, Plex Web and Plex Android app on my Slate via my main, admin account.
I looked for the sync option on the web and behold! It was there! I didn’t even know Plex Web could “sync” files somehow. I’ll have to look into that later, interesting.
I then uninstalled the Plex Android app from my Slate. Reinstalled it from the Google Play Store. Then signed in with the same account and access the same user (my own master user). I proceeded to the options to try and find the sync option, no sync option. I then hit the “Share debugging data” and all I got was this:
Manufacturer: Google
Device: nocturne_cheets
Model: Google Pixel Slate
Product: nocturne
Version: 9

That log doesn’t look very useful. I presume it means there are no errors.
So the sync problem still appears to be completely isolated to Plex Android on Chromebooks.
Random theory, because I’ve seen other types of problems related to this across other apps. Is it possible that the Plex app can’t see the hard drive because it’s a Chromebook and not a phone, therefore it doesn’t know where to find the drive? Just a thought. It wouldn’t be the first time as a Chromebook user that an app was designed with phones in mind but required some extra code to make them work in Chromebooks properly and that wasn’t considered since the user base is relatively small.
To echo the above, as I mentioned before I have no problems synching to any other android or other device. I can’t sync to any of my chromebooks. I’ve also reinstalled, logged in and back out several times.
From the server I can see where I can manually sync to a device, but the chromebook devices do not show up as options to sync to, though other devices do.
Just got Android app version 8.10.0. Release notes had nothing about sync and confirmed the new version still has all the same problems with sync.
Of note, but of much lesser importance… I noticed that if you have a pin code for a user, the app will not recognize a bluetooth or hard wired keyboard? You HAVE to type the pin on the screen via the touch interface.
