Synology 7.2.1 Plex app won't run

Server Version#: DSM 7.2.1-69057 update 5
Plex Version#: 1.40.4.8840-70008840
i clicked on update for plex media server last night…and ever since the plex app won’t run. I tried restarting, uninstalling/reinstalling and updating to a newer version downloaded online. NOTHING. so i uninstalled it again and went back to the original download that is broken.

Also tried running the PMS permissions script - result said normal…didn’t comeback with an error anyway.

i click run, it says loading, then it says OPEN for 2 second and goes right back to ‘Run’. Says manually stopped at the top. The app won’t open/run.

If you updated to DSM 7.2.2, you must also update to PMS for 7.2.2
(there are two packages right now: Pre 7.2.2 and Post 7.2.2)

Synology changed the package internal format.

The solution is simple:

  1. Uninstall the existing 7.2.1 app – KEEP option (first button)
  2. Download the x86_64 version for DSM 7.2.2+ from Plex.tv/downloads
  3. Manual install the “DSM72” SPK file.

For those who tried to follow the steps above and were a little confused, you must first click on the Plex Media Server > Synology DSM 7.2.2+ > then you’ll see the Intel/AMD 64-bit option that ChuckPa is referring to. It wasn’t obvious to me at first.

I was kind of freaking out after I updated DSM and Plex just wouldn’t work. Those Synology guys are kind of jerks for not making that part of the DSM update warning about Video Station also not working.

Am I right that there still is no official Plex install for Synology? We’re all doing the manual update thing every few weeks?

Same exact thing is happening - Plex app still won’t run.
Now i am on DSM 7.2.2-72806 and PMS for 7.2.2+ version 1.41.1.9057-72009057
i uninstalled PMS before updating DSM, then installed new PMS version.

What’s next?

Thanks!! Worked perfectly! Really appreciate it. Was a little spooked that Synology disabled so much stuff with the 7.2.2 DSM update but the latest Plex package worked fine.

From your logs:

Clearly, your Plex database is corrupt.

Try running @ChuckPa 's database repair script. You will find that here:
PlexDBRepair - ChuckPa

You can also try restoring a database from backup:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/

Well i am unable to ssh to my NAS…permission denied. no matter what i try, new admin account, etc…no luck.

so tried running the repair from the task scheduler…didn’t get an error, but it didn’t fix it either.
tried replacing the db files…to restore. didn’t work either.

so blow it away and start again…?

Open DSM Control Panel and go to Terminal & SNMP and enable SSH there. Also, you should disable Telnet while you are there if it isn’t already disabled.

If repairing and restoring the Plex database failed, then you have little choice but to uninstall Plex and choose the option to remove all files.

Reboot the NAS and then install the latest version of Plex for DSM 7.2.2+.

Obviously, you will need to rebuild Plex adding new libraries etc., but that should not be too painful.

If I may suggest?

Work on SSH access first.

–OR–

If you cannot, use the “Task Scheduler” method (It’s very awkward but does work)

i did run it from the task scheduler…didn’t fix my issue.

what file do i need to save to put back posters and backgrounds? probably the biggest pain when starting over…
already saved the preferences.xml.

You cannot save any of it, even Preferences.xml should be discarded.

If you use custom posters at all, then you should name them the same as your Movie files and place them alongside.

E.G.
Altered States (1980).mkv
Altered States (1980).jpg

Then Edit the Library and make sure you enable Use local assets and Prefer local metadata on the Advanced tab.

Also in Plex Settings > Server > Agents, enable Local Media Assets and move it to the top of the list.

That way, Plex will pickup and use your custom posters for your Movies.

If It’s any consolation, I have close to 8000 Movies and every one of them has a custom poster.

To add to Trumpy’s comments,

Because of all the testing I do, I often either lose (crash) my server or am forced to do a rebuild for new versions.

It’s for these reasons, I put my posters and extras with my media.

(If I uploaded to PMS, those posters would get stored internal to PMS and then lost when I did a rebuild)

Okay - thanks for the tips. I will definitely be doing that this time around.

What would have been nice, is if the plex update didn’t kill it to begin with.
was using it 20 mins before the update.

Given you’re on 7.2.2, there’s very little choice here.

You CAN uninstall plex (KEEP option)
and install the previous version

hoping to avoid the detection of the corruption.

I do recommend you start making full backups (using HyperBackup) of the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

It will protect you from things like this.

HyperBackup makes a perfect image backup (compressed) and then will restore pefectly.

I very much doubt it was the Plex update alone that caused the issue.

You likely had some level of corruption beforehand and the DSM upgrade tipped things over the edge.

Had you run Chuck’s script before upgrading Plex and DSM, you may have faired better.

In any case, at least now you should have an error free DB and you can rebuild Plex the right way this time, so not all is lost, it’s just a little annoying is all.

Quick question –

Are there database backups available to use?

i didn’t update the DSM until after it was broken. the update was recommended in installed apps.
but since Chuck recommended the 7.2.2+ version of Plex…i updated it then.

@trumpy81 and it was fine - so not sure what you mean by RIGHT WAY.

Thank you @ChuckPa Chuck…i will do that backup.

there were backups, but replacing that didn’t work either.

Fun thing is, I have a working one sitting beside the broken one. NOT updating that one until this one is fixed…they both don’t need to be broken. But i will be making a full backup of that one before i do anything to it.

OOOOOO? You have a working one right along side ?

Does it have all the same posters you want to preserve?

actually it does

I was simply referring to adding the custom posters etc., which IMHO is the right way to do it.

On the subject of rebuilding things, I recently had a HDD fail and during the process of replacing it, I lost yet another drive.

I had to rebuild the entire NAS. It took a solid week just to copy all the files back onto it and of course all my Plex backups were on that NAS, so I lost them too.

Lesson learnt, I now store my Plex backups on the other NAS and my PC … lol
