"Failed to run the package service"

Whenever I install the Plex package on my Synology DS214se, I go to hit “Run” and it gives me this message:

I’ve tried re-installing, rebooting, manually installing the package, updating the Synology’s software, you name it. Not sure where to go from here…

I am getting this error myself after updating to DSM 6.1.5-15254

What model Synology do you have?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling PMS? (the software and your library data are kept separate so there is no harm in doing so)

Synology DS918+

Did you perform the uninstall/re-install step as I requested above?

yep :frowning: I also tried not running immediately after install like you mentioned in a similar thread. It didn’t work.

:frowning:

Are you comfortable at the command line if given the commands to type?

So So. I can give it a try.

In the steps below,

  1. SSH to the NAS (SSH is enabled in Control Panel -> Terminal & SNMP)
  2. Sign in as admin
  3. Elevate to root (privileged) user
  4. Examine the system log. Your errors will be at the end.
[chuck@lizum ~.102]$ ssh -l admin 192.168.0.23
admin@192.168.0.23's password:
admin@moesern:~$ sudo -su root
sh-4.3# cd /var/log
sh-4.3# grep -iR plex messages

Sorry for the delay. I couldn’t fit the entire log on here so I just cut and pasted some of it. Not sure what any of this means.

That’s telling me what I was hoping didn’t happen.

  1. It knows PMS is installed.
  2. It goes to start it but doesn’t find the files. servicecfg_internal_lib.c:187 Failed to start job [pkgctl-Plex Media Serve r][0xD900 manager.cpp:204]
  3. Conclusion, the package manager has a problem. If we can’t find it, a DSM reset will be required. (a pain to do but doable)

To survey appstore and see what is where

sudo -su root
cd /
ls /volume*/@appstore

If more than one Plex Media Server shows up, please let me know
if only one, the output of this will tell us where it is:

echo /volume*/@appstore/Plex*

There was only one. It is located at: /volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server

Ok…

One last time before I ask you to do a DSM reset. If this fails, there is no denying DSM is damaged somehow.

  1. Remove PMS in Package Center.
  2. Go back into the shell and rm -rf "/volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server"
  3. Return to the DSM desktop UI
  4. Control Panel - Users - Delete user Plex . Do not mistake this with deleting the Plex share. (your metadata)
  5. Should you want to start completely from scratch. Control Panel - Shared Folders - Delete the Plex share. This will remove ALL your metadata
  6. Restart DSM
  7. Redownload PMS from plex.tv
  8. Install it using Manual Install.
  9. After installation, wait 30-45 seconds for it to start and begin it’s rudimentary initialization.
  10. Open in your browser and begin the normal first-run setup again from scratch

Great! Looks like everything is back up and running. Thank you for your help and detailed instructions (I needed it). Now the D’Oh! moment. When I looked at the Plex User Account, it said the Plex password had expired. I continued to follow your instructions and deleted the account anyway. I am not sure if that had anything to do with the problem or not. I changed the account settings so the password never expires to avoid that issue in the future. Thank you again.

I was having the same issue as OP, followed the instructions set forth here but unfortunately am still receiving the “failed to run” error. How do I do a “DSM reset” to fix this? Is there any indication in the logs what the cause of this problem is?

Thank you!

https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/How_to_reset_your_Synology_NAS

Remember to make a backp of your system configuration (Control Panel - Backup & Restore - Backup Configuration)

After DSM is reinstalled , you restore the configuration and all the share definitions are back (remember to check the box when doing the config restoration).

You will have your NAS back, except for the apps.

At this point:

  1. Delete the Plex share
  2. Delete user Plex
  3. Reinstall the SPK

So Frustrated! So everything working fine and then I updated DSM to latest version on my 1815+. Also tried to update Plex to the newest 32 bit *.spk version. Started saying it was installing then “Failed to Run Package Service” hit. I have redownloaded the PMS (spk file) numerous times and tried to install with the same results. I have removed the plex user as directed, restarted DSM, redownloaded the spk file and tried to let it restart but I still get the same error. I do not understand the cmd line aspect of the instructions above, but I have done all the other parts short of resetting the DSM. Any further suggestions? I have quite a large library and do not want to have to start over. Many many hours of work to get it like it is now. After 2.5 hrs I am hoping you or someone can give some guidance as all I have achieved is that now my plex user is gone. If Synology is such pain would it make more sense to download widows version and just install on the computer and direct to storage locations on the NAS as someone suggested elsewhere? If so is there a way to take the meta data along for the transition? Will all still be available when reaching the server when traveling etc. I hate to stop using Plex because I love it when it works, but this is becoming huge time sync (prior similar issue a few months ago and a few months before that.).

Randy,

Don’t start over.

OK I’ll try that. I’ll let you know how it goes. I assume I just uninstall, restart dsm, install 64 bit and then watch a movie?
