Synology DS918+: Move Plex to SSD and remove HDD from current SHR

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488

Hello All,

My current setup:

  • Synology DS918+
  • 1 SHR Volume with (4TB + 8TB + 8TB)
  • Total 5.2 TB of data

I notice that my Plex interface is slow to load. Reading up, it looks like an SSD Cache wont help this much. Instead, moving Plex to a SSD volume in drive bays (not the the M2, which is only for caching) will help load Plex faster.

Questions:

  1. I would like to remove the first 4TB drive from the SHR volume1. This was my first drive. Will removing the 4 TB drive leave me 8TB storage with 8 TB protection? I understand storage will go down from 12 TB down to 8 TB, which is fine as I only have ~5 TB of data right now.
  2. I would like to install 2 SSD (one for protection) in drive bays as volume1 for applications and Plex metadata, and make the 2 HDDs as volume2 for media storage. What is the best way to do this with having to recreate the whole thing. This is what I plan to do based on reading this.
  3. Shutdown
  4. Remove the 2 HDDs
  5. Install 2 SSDs in drive bays 1 and 2 (make them volume1)
  6. Install DSM
  7. Install Plex
  8. Shutdown
  9. Add the 2 HDDs ( Question 3 : Will my application shared folders (eg. Plex) still show up?)
  10. Startup again and stop plex
  11. Move existing Plex metadata from HDD volume to SSD volume.

Would appreciate your input and response to my questions. Thanks for your time.
