Synology DSM 6 to 7 chaos :P

So upgrade from DSM 6 to 7 as it had been out a long time and figured all bugs would be ironed out. Did the upgrade to 7, then upgraded to 7.1. Then it said it needed to repair the Plex package which had been updated manually before in DSM6 silly me. Then when that didn’t work, go the latest manual download on plex.tv. Libraries gone, when i try to add a new library and rescan it just says no library’s available or added and it’s a new instance on “servername”. I can see the new folder is PlexMediaServer which has a new date, it looks like existing data is still in the Plex folder on the NAS. Taking a copy of the old “Plex” dir tree now.

Is it recoverable from here?. Before i start ham fisting it more. Thought of deleting the new package 1.41.0.8992.70008992. Delete PlexMediaServer folder, rename old plex folder to PlexMediaServer, install PMS from plex.tv/downloads as manual install and then adding PlexMediaServer System user with full control if necessary?

Or am I wasting my time. Any help appreciated.

DSM 7 introduced some severe changes to how apps like PMS can run in your NAS. There’s a dedicated guide on how to setup Plex on DSM 7 and to restore your old server.

Do not. That would be bad.

Also, if you were running a Plex 1.40+ release before updating DSM, do not install PMS 1.29.2 from Synology Package Center. Due to database changes it is not compatible with PMS 1.40+.

Yes.

In addition to the FAQ linked by Tom, see this post: Struggling with migration from DSM 6 to DSM7 - #2 by FordGuy61.

In Step 6 it says it is OK to use the version in Package Center. That info is now outdated. As mentioned above, 1,29.2 is incompatible with 1.40+ releases.

Backed up “Plex” folder. “PlexMediaServer” was a shell folder not working.

Uninstalled 1.4.x version from NAS, chose delete all data (not recoverable). Then deleted “PlexMediaServer” folder that it didn’t fully delete.

Then obtained latest version from plex.tv, manual install on nas, choose install with claim, get claim code from plex, enter. migration.log said it didn’t have access, changed from read-write to full control on PlexMediaServer share/folder, stuck installing for ages and didn’t appear to be doing anything. Overnight i could then see Plex return however any file played didn’t work. Added PlexMediaServer user to all media shared folders. Stopped app on NAS, closed app on TV. Started on NAS and on TV. Now working.

Hope that helps someone else that didn’t RTFM before doing the DSM upgrade :stuck_out_tongue:
