Completed messed up upgrading Synology DSM from 6 to 7 and now struggling to recover old Plex data

Server Version#: 1.32.2.7002-7000

So ashamed to say that I DIDN’T READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE I UPGRADED!

Basically, I upgraded my Synology NAS to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5 from DSM 6 and didn’t uninstall Plex.

I followed a few articles after Plex didn’t see my Synology after the upgrade and I have since uninstalled and re-installed it several times, using the latest version for Synology and manual package installs. Some articles said to do normal installs and set the permissions for the system user, which I did, then I uninstalled and re-installed again and claimed the server.

Now my Plex is showing a brand new server called “HomeNAS” (the name of my Synology NAS) and the old server (called “Synology”) is Unavailable.

Is there any way to unpick this?

I don’t want to have to re-add all of the media to the new server instance, I want to access the old one.

Thanks and sorry for this.

Very simple:

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 package and choose the ERASE option (red one)

  2. Using this FAQ How-To, (Scenario 2 will apply to you),
    – make sure you get every set
    – You will see ‘Full Control’ permissions assigned
    – You must remember to click the ‘Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files’ when changing permissions for the installation.

  3. When you then start installation, don’t panic about the time required .
    – It has a lot of work to do.
    – Open a new tab to the syno.
    – In Filestation → Plex shared folder, you’ll see “migration.log” created. (after 2 minutes )
    – You can follow the process and status

AMAZING!! Thank you! Worked perfectly.
Thanks SOOO much.
