[Synology DSM 7] Crash on tif files scanning

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173-7000
Player Version#: N/A

Hi all,
owning a DS3018xs, I did a clean installation of plex mediaserver after upgrading to DSM 7.0.1-42218 and PMS crashes regularly when scanning my photo library.

I found that the crash is deterministic and caused by tif files in the library.

The files are good, aka not malformed, I also tried to resave them with Photoshop but PMS keep crashing when found them.

Everything was working fine on DSM6.
Anyone else has this issue? Any know workaround?

Thank you in advance.

same. running Synology DSM 7 on 916+ … supposedly most recent PMS version (1.25.0.5246) solves for this extremely annoying bug… it does not. Not sure why this was not detected in debugging phase before releasing the Synology 7 version…

Folks,

The same binary code which is used for DSM 6 is also used for DSM 7.
The only difference is how the SPK is laid out, the control scripts, and DSM 7 itself.

That said, May I see the DEBUG logs please ?

Hi ChuckPa,
thank you for your answer.
You can find the logs in attachment.

I have:

  • enabled the logs
  • replaced the folder with my jpeg only photos with one containing the tiff only
  • run a rescan
  • obtained the crash
  • restarted the server
  • downloaded the logs

Please let me know if I can do anything else to help.
Thanks.

Would you please do the following?

  1. Turn VERBOSE logging OFF again . It makes a big mess and loses the data we need. SAVE after making that change

  2. Restart Plex

  3. Wait 2 minutes for the Notify list to load .

  4. Scan the files (to recreate)

  5. After failure, again restart

  6. Download the ZIP

Ok, I disabled the verbose log.
Please let me know if helps.

Paul,
Thank you.

Would it be possible to get one or two of the files which causes this?
Something generic from in here where it does crash – OR – the exact crash file?

If so, please place in a ZIP file and attach here.

Thanks.

Hi ChuckPa,
sorry for the late reply. Here you can find one of files that cause the crash.
It is pretty deterministic in my case, I just rescan the library with just this file inside and the crash happens.

Photos.zip (26.0 MB)

I did some additional tests, the crash seems to happen randomly on many tif files which are well formed and produced with different softwares, including lightroom and photoshop.

If the files are subsampled to 1/4th of the original area, then the crash seems not happening.

The total number of TIF files I have removed from the original photos folder is around 2.3k.
Using only the remaining 55k JPEG files the scan get completed correctly.

Thanks.

Issue still there after updating to 1.25.0-5282-7000.
It seems to be less reproducible now, not able to isolate a single picture causing the crash.
Trying to bisect among a set of tif files causing the crash do not allow to isolate one file like for the previous version.

Thanks.

Paul,
I’m updating the Issue ticket now with this version of PMS.

@paul1047

Using the file you gave me, on a fresh PMS installation, it is 100% reproducible

Hi CuckPa,
I can still reproduce the issue with 1.25.1.5286-7000.
Regards.

I have not yet seen any progress on this.

I will advise when I do.

Sorry for the inconvenience. ( I’m not involved in prioritization but do know the DB work has taken priority to fix )
