Plex media server crashes on Windows while scanning library

Server Version: 1.24.3.5033-757abe6b4
Player Version: web
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Hello! I tried to import my photos library to plex, but it crashes when I start scanning it.
PMS Logs.zip (2.9 MB)

I have the same issue. Everything works fine with movies/tv shows but as soon as I add a photo library it starts crashing.

All the crashes on the 26th September were FreeImage.dll crashes processing tif file

D:\alexander-martyanov\Pictures\Фотоальбом\прочее\Рамки\gold 2 copy.tif

There are issues with FreeImage - could you zip this file and send it to me as attachment by Private Message

To stop the crashes - please remove this file from your library

You may find that another file will then give a crash and we need to identify it from the logs. There are issues with tif and raw files with FreeImage

Debug Server Logs please after one of these crashes so can start an investigation

I cannot find any uploaded crash reports for your server

That worked, thanks! I’ll PM you to continue investigation

Server Version: 1.24.5.5160-7000
Player Version: 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78

I am also having an issue scanning my photos library on my NAS. Plex Media Server always crashes shortly after beginning to scan the library. Please find my logs attached. Other apps, such as Lightroom Classic, are able to scan the folder successfully.

Thanks.

We have had issues with FreeImage software within Plex Media Server crashing with some raw and tiff files

I can see this file being scanned just before the last scan

/volume1/photos/Apple iPhone 6/2015/06/IMG_0750_2.tif

You could put that file in a separate test library and see if scanning that test library crashes the server. When confirmed, please remove from all the libraries. We may stumble on other tiff or raw files and crash - although we did manage to scan the following without a crash

/volume1/photos/Apple iPhone 6/2015/06/IMG_0443_2.tif

There is no current fix for the FreeImage crashes

I am not able to locate an uploaded crash report
Could you see if the file is still around in the Plex Media Server tmp directory
I am not sure on Synology DSM 7 if it is
/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/tmp
or
/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/tmp

The crash report file name starts with 3e0f6a82-c680-4640-c5041aa6-b90e5bc1
If you find it, please zip and attach

Update:
And if you confirm it is IMG_0750_2.tif that triggers the crash, would it be possible to get the file and I will add to the issue we have open on FreeImage crashes? If you send the file, please send it through Private Message on the forum and zip the tif file and attach the zip file

Thanks

Thanks, @sa2000. I’m attaching the crash report you asked for. I also put that tiff file into its own library. It generated a thumbnail of the image, but when I clicked on it in the player app, the Plex server became completely unresponsive. I will send you the file directly.

Thank You

I can confirm this was a crash in libfreeimage.so used by Plex Media Server. I have added your evidence to the open issue that we have

If I had to guess, my hunch would be that FreeImage isn’t able to process a TIFF that has zip compression internally. As for RAW files, my camera can save RAW files as uncompressed RAW, compressed lossless RAW, or compressed lossy RAW. It may be compression that’s tripping it up. Thanks for the help, @sa2000.
